avast 7 has disabled email links

Hi
I hope this is the correct place to ask this question. I have recently upgraded from Avast 5 to Avast 7. I have had a few problems since the upgrade but dispite asking for help by submitting a ticket, communication from Avast is proving very slow. My remaining problem is, I can no longer use any links that I recieve in my emails. I get a message saying,

“This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator”

I have looked at the knowledgebase, adjusted my firewall, emailed Avast and looked in the Forum but cannot get an answer. I am getting very frustrated. please can someone guide me through a repair for this. I use Microsoft Outlook and run windows 7. Thank you for your time.

It seems the admin doesn’t allow whatever you’re trying to do. Did you contact your admin yet…??

Try this : Control Panel >> Default Programs > Set Program Access and Computer Defaults. Make sure Outlook is set to default.

Thank you for your suggestions, as far as I know I am the systems administrator. Adrian, I tried your suggestion but it did not work. Any more ideas please?

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)
  • Which version…??

it is not a uncommon problem if you google it…

Thanks Pondus. So it’s no avast issue then.

me think not…
had this myselfe one time and as i remeber it was just a setting that needed changing

:)Thank you all for your suggestions. I eventually got a reply from the Avast Techs and tried some of their suggestions. In the end I reinstall Google Chrome and the hyperlinks now work. Not sure if I like the feeling that I have to use a program to get my links to work but Hey Ho.

You’re welcome.

This is indeed caused by Avast 7 install and it is very annoying, Avast is beginning to go the way of AVG. On upgrading to Avast 7 I found Chrome had been set by Avast to the default browser and pinned to my taskbar. Naturally I retaliated by uninstalling Chrome and telling them what Avast had done. Promptly my web links in Outlook emails failed. As a temporary fix I had to re-install Chrome, ticking the option NOT to make it the default browser. This has fixed it but my boot drive is an SSD and I don’t have space or inclination to keep software on it I don’t use. Also genewrally I don’t like software that installs itself or is installed withoput asking. Nor do I like software that insatll other products by the back door, anti virus software certainly should not do that

Note Windows 7 restore was unable to undo the Avast 7 install. Not uncommon fore Win 7 but I suspect caused by Avast.

As I recall Avast screwed up their last software upgrade, I forget how but I remembers users deciding to dump it then. I had to re-install Avast completely and worse than that could not uninstall it without a special Avast utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

davidbeaumont, avast! offers an opt-out option for not installing Google Chrome…
And about the failure of avast installation itself, maybe you should try running the uninstall tool in Safe Mode (press f8 while booting) and then make an installation from scratch and do not install Chrome.

Not only has avast 7.0.1451 made it impossible to use hyperlinks from within emails, it has also made it impossible to use ctr-click on links within Word documents (e.g. from a cross-reference to a figure to the figure caption). In addition, the ‘opt-out’ from installing Google Chrome mentioned by “Tech” from the Avast team, is only partial as EVERY time i boot up I get asked if i want to update avast and Google chrome installation is clicked “on”, so i need to unselect it, click “Finish” before I can continue working.
This is worse than annoying.
“Tech” from the Avast team has also offered no solution to the original problem of disabled email links.
And what is the solution to the disabled Word links?
I guess the solution is to uninstall Avast and use AVG?

I’m using Windows 7, Office 10 and free Avast, version mentioned above.

Please update to version 7.0.1456…!!

Oh, thanks Asyn. I did not see this, before deciding to start a new thread with the additional Word problem in it. I’m a bit wary of installing the update, but hope you’re right and that sorts it out… Will report back, to this and my own thread.

  1. You’re welcome.
  2. Please do so.

See my response on : https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100915.0 (sorry for ending up on two threads!).

OK, seems everything works now. Any problems left…??

Asyn,

alisonruth has double posted and is getting help in her new thread. The OP has been instructed to post all future problems in her new thread https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100915.0to avoid confusion. Thanks.

Thanks for the info SafeSurf.
