My wife’s laptop (Win 7 x64) has had version 6 on it for a while - very happy with it. Three days ago, she got a pop-up suggesting an upgrade to version 7 so she did. Yesterday, she told me that she could not log on to the computer - she’d just get a black screen with a movable mouse cursor. I spent nearly 5 hours carefully and systematically trying to track down the problem - it turned out to be avast! 7. Apparently, the installation did not complete. After lots of messing around in safe mode, creating a new user account, disabling all manner of services, many reboots etc I ended up repairing the version 7 installation. This fixed everything - or so I had thought. The black screen problem came back even while my wife was logged on. I did the repair again and it seemed to work again but the final window kept popping up every log on and, again, my wife couldn’t log on. So I did a full uninstall - which has done the job. I have reinstalled version 6.
So, how long can I continue to use version 6 and receive definition updates? I have a couple of other computers with version 6 and I certainly do not want to have to go through all this pain again.
