Avast 7 installed yesterday. This am PC stays on login screen forever

Posting this on the Avast forum as I upgraded yesterday my PC from Avast 6 to the official Avast 7 Free version without any issues and this has been the only change made to my PC environment.

This morning I power up my PC and it goes thru post processing and then to the Win7 login screen. I enter my password, hit return and it sat there doing nothing (waited 5 minutes) not even any indication (spinning wheel etc) that it was doing anything. Had to force a power off because even the login screen option to reboot did not work. Powered on again and everything worked fine this time.

Only change is the new version of Avast 7 is installed and wondering if this has anything to do with the boot scan?.

Any suggestions as to what to do if it happens again?

Thanks,

Gillest

This is happening to me too, since I updated Avast half an hour ago. I’ve tried 3 times and I can’t get to my desktop. Twice I’ve been stuck on “Waiting” after entering my password, and the last time it got past that but was just a black screen with my cursor.

I’m currently using Safe Mode.

I’m using Windows 7 (up to date).

Having the exact same problem. After installing latest Avast update on Windows 7 64 bit - screen loads to a black screen with the mouse. Left on the screen for 5 min and no change. I booted in safe mode, and was able to uninstall Avast. Everything was fine after the uninstall.

Avast customer support could not find this thread in the forum, and did not know what to do to fix the problem.

Uninstalling. I have been happy using Avast before, but customer support was not much help in this issue.

not exactly same as mine as i get the win7 welcome screen and can enter my password but when i hit return it does nothing and stays there on the welcome screen. Anyways tried to reproduce it again by shutting it down and starting again from the power on button but so far haven`t seen the original error.

Exactly the same for me after Avast 7 upgrade.

Reboot, login screen comes up, click on my icon and all icons disappear (doesn’t ask for password) and PC locks up.
Avast won’t do anything, says “Avast! service is not running”

Using Windows 7 64 bit.
Bailing out with system restore …

I had the exact same problem (‘return’ doesn’t respond after entering password). Only once and it did ultimately start but I’d be very grateful if someone could advise if there’s any risk of getting locked out of Windows.

try letting it finish through…I’m not sure how long it takes as i let it go for an hour and was back to normal when i returned…

I’ve turned the rootkit check at boot off … no idea whether that will fix the problem but hopefully someone will soon advise!

First time visitor… the above is the exact same thing that has happened to my computer, except worse. I cant uninstall it. Whatever I try it comes up with a rejection pop-up. Even in safe mode when I do get rid of the software and restart in normal mode, the computer repetitively resets after the windows logo. My only option was to do a restore to 4 days ago and now the computer works, but I’m still left with a disabled Avast that I cant uninstall/delete…

Please advise on a way I can properly uninstall the software. Thanks in advance.

well guys, if u want to make a bug report, please put a more informative title, eg. remote assistance crashes on (fill in ur operating system) followed by error report

then for details, u can add a screenshot of the problem, state what other programmes ur running, eg. antispyware, firewall (basically anything that runs on system startup)

please also give the support ppl sometime to see ur topic! they are not robots…this topic is only from yesterday.

i suggest (if u updated Avast! 7 from Avast! 6)

  1. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (to reduce chance of corrupted install)
  2. uninstalling Avast! the normal way with windows
  3. run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE! )
  4. run the uninstall utility (2 TIMES) total, one for Avast! 7
  5. reboot and go into safe mode once more, second time for Avast! 6 (this is because i noted u have updated to Avast! 7 from Avast! 6)
  6. reboot again, this time to normal windows mode
  7. install the fresh package
  8. please report ur findings here =)
