Avast 7 on Win XP/SP3 - Can't update definitions -'Not enough storage' error

Hi,
Am running Avast 7.0.1474 Free on Win XP/SP3. The last couple of days I have been unable to update my virus definitions. I get the error:

Not enough storage space is available to process this command.’

Initially I thought Avast had finally stopped supporting this old version and I was preparing to install the latest Avast 2015. However to check, I installed a fresh version of 7.0.1474 to a virtual machine and this new install of 7.0.1474 was able to update the virus definitions. So it looks like Avast is still supporting this old version…?
Can anyone give any help on how to get round this error and update my virus definitions? I would rather keep this old version for now if possible.
Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem with avast 8. My current definition is 151024-1 release date 24/10.

I see, thanks. Mine is 151020-2. I’ve found some old references to this problem on Google but no real solution as yet.
PS My hard disk has ca 25 GB free so it’s not that.

Just tried to repair avast but I get an error processing the package. I got 460GB free. I have not got the slightest how to proceed.

Only VPS update are on but product support is ended,Pls update to Avast!2015 version from:https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=176600.msg1252239#msg1252239

Only VPS update are on
Hi, I went to https://www.avast.com/en-gb/download-update but the vpsupd.exe file is 214 MB in size!? Why is it so large? Normally updated definition files are KB not MB aren't they?

Why is it so large, well it is the complete (VPS) virus definitions database file. It isn’t an incremental update.

I see, thanks. Looks like I may have to update to Avast 2015.
If I update from my existing Avast version 7 via the Taskbar > R-click Avast icon> Update → Program
Will this work OK or would a clean install after uninstalling version 7 be preferable?
Are settings retained eg file exclusions, folder exclusions, components selected etc

Well, james650 I reckon I’ll have to do the same I mean update to 2015. I would go for a clean install really.

One thing you would notice is that the complete virus database if you wanted to download it for avast 2014 & 2015 is much smaller and it is more optimised. Something that can’t be done with the older program versions.

Just installed latest version on an xpsp3pro and everything is running really smoothly. You see I was to scared to make the move and was using version 8 all this time. I have to admit it this version really rocks. Thank you Avast.

Thanks Tangy.
Did you do a clean install ie uninstall your version 8 first or did you install via the Taskbar ie R-click Avast icon> Update → Program?

@James650
Firstly I downloaded latest version of avast and saved on desktop.
Then started pc on safe mode and uninstalled avast 8 with the avast cleaner. Re-booted computer
and then I did a custom install of avast . Everything is tickety boo.
Downloaded avast from here:
