But, what was the error ?
If you don’t say what the error was we can’t really help.

Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.
Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.
You may need to reboot after the repair.

Normally I would now suggest downloading the full virus definitions database (http://www.avast.com/download-update), but the database is different in avast 9.0 (2014) and I don’t know if they have that available yet.
There are only two options for avast! VPS update (previously for avast 5,6,7 & 8 ) and for avast! 4 VPS update, for avast 4.8. Since avast! 9 has a slightly different database format I suspect it will require the additional VPS Update for avast! 9.
So for now I would wait and see if the next auto update (or manual update from the avastUI) resolves itself.

Thanks for that.
Why now that 2014 has been officially release it should be added to the regular download-update page.
@ wdwpower
Try downloading that update to your hard disk, double click on it and that should hopefully update your database and correct the error.
