avast 8 program update

I have installed free version of Avast 8. It is working fine. When I received the message for program update, I updated. I was asked to restart the computer Vista Home Premium 64. I t did not restart. For about one hour there was a black screen. I had to shut down the computer. When I click “start windows normally” sma thing happens black screen. So I chose “start with previous configuration” It did start but Avast gives the message “not protected” All the choices like scan etc does not work either. So, I uninstalled Avast and reinstall it. It is working now. However I am afraid tu update the program again. Whar should I do?

Was it a clean install? Try a clean install instruction can be found here http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility :slight_smile:

Run the uninstaller for any AV’s you used prior to avast from here to remove remanents: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=117113.0
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
    Go into device manager and show hidden devices. Remove all the non plug and play devices, that are related to avast [they start with asw].
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot
