My first post although I’m using Avast! for two years to my entire satisfaction.
have just acquired a laptop running under Vista Home Premium.
Avast! is of course the a.v program I want to keep! Point!! The only question I have now is
which f.w. should I install. With my Toshiba came a trial version of Mcafee Security which I
dont like. I’ve heard about PCTools f.w but learnt(understood) it has some issues with
Avast!. Other firewalls are mystery to me.
Can you be of assistance to me? You people here at Avast are the most experienced
regarding this jewel. Your recommendation will be mine
Hello D Miron, important to note the McAfee trial must be completely removed, or a confliction with Avast is likely. On this page, about halfway down, is a removal tool http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507 plus instructions to completely remove the AV.
I have no problems with Avast and PCTools firewall, which suits me well. It seems to be fairly easy for a dummy to configure. (Well, I did it.)
Others use Comodo, Online Armour (by Tall Emu), Zone Alarm etc. Can’t speak for them, sorry. Certainly the first two seem effective, with a built in HIPS, I have heard the most recent version of ZA has a problem with some machines.
Other names include Kerio, Sygate, and a whole list here: http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/firewall.html
I would stay with McAfee firewall only (if you can).
PCTools works great in some systems with avast. The same for Comodo.
The other possibility is Online Armour and, if you want the last resource, Zone Alarm.
In July, avast will release it’s own firewall (although not free).
if you don’t need to block any outband connection and just want to be safe from in-band connections from hacker from out-side, your windows Firewall is enough and you don’t to any other software, but if you really wish to block out-band connection, for example to block virus.exe file that maybe (wish never!) be in your computer from access internet, here is a good list that you can choose between them:
i can say vista got a good firewall and outbound protection if i was you i will choice to stay with windows firewall but if you want another firewall i can say Comodo have a good firewall rate another way is to choice the recommandention of the other guy
D Miron, you might want to check this out. It is a GUI to enable more user-friendly control and configuration of the Vista firewall. http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/index.html
I’ve read a few user reports about it, but have no experience of it (nor Vista. Think I’ll wait for Windows8.) so don’t take this as an endorsement.
