avast and anti-spyware resident (realtime)

Hi all,

I have done searches on this board about this subject and i find all of them contradictory,

the latest avast home edition HAS resident (realtime) anti-SPYWARE / rootkit protection, included with resident anti-virus

It is also suggested that only one resident anti-virus, and ONLY ONE RESIDENT ANTI-SPYWARE BE USED on one device.

Yet, numerous times on this board, advice is given to run avast with a resident anti-spyware program?!

Do the people giving this advice KNOW THAT THE LATEST EDITION OF ADVAST HAS RESIDENT (REALTIME) ANTI-SPYWARE BUILT-IN?
(and according to pc mag it supposidly is really good resident protection)

If so, please answer the contradiction of running only one resident anti-spyware at one time - yet advising running both advast (which once again has resident antispyware along with antivirus protection) with a seperate realtime/resident anti-spyware program?

Joe

Avast has antispyware certification. This is according to Westcoast labs.
Don’t ask me for the software coding reason, I don’t know, but maybe it’s because the AV engine/s are what is doing the detection/blocking of spyware - related items, it doesn’t interfere with dedicated antispyware programs, like MBAM, Spybot, SAS etc. (Once again, don’t ask me why, but the way a AV engine works is different to the way an AS engine works. Be aware that the line between spyware and virus has become a bit blurred. The biggest threats these days are more likely to be from trojans and worms, and the payload they can carry, that pure viruses. Most AV’s worth the name should also detect - and hopefully stop - worms, trojans, rootkits etc.)
It does interfere with another resident AV, (and vice versa) in fact, most of them will interfere with each other. And these days, a lot have specific removal tool to clean up leftovers.

I would estimate that most of the users on this board, at least those that have been around for a while, would be well aware that Avast is AS certified. It was a fairly big deal when the certification was announced.

I agree with Tarq57^^

Avast! has an antispyware module^^

So why using other AS programs when avast! has one?^^

Just use an AS with no real time protection^^(used only when manual scanning^^)ex MBAM^^

Uhh, you might have misread me. There is nothing wrong with using most resident antispywares with Avast. The extra protection increase might be small; for some it is worth it.
Some combinations have the potential to cause some problems, most of the ones used by the senior forum members play quite well together.

Copy^^

and thanks^^

Im not that literate when it comes to these kind of things^^

P.S. Just a normal high schooler^^lol^^

-= In order to remove confusion, use an on-demand anti-spyware/anti-adware instead like Malwarebytes Antimalware…

-= Though Avast has an antispyware module, we cannot assure 100% security so its still better to keep a backup for layered defense…

-= cinchez,
Highschool…? In what school…? There’s a possibility for both of us to be schoolmates… :wink:

@chronoboi^^

Currently im studying in SMA Dipolog^^heheh Im in Mindanao^^
Incoming 3rd yr this June^^

Wat about u?^^

confused
Is it NOT advisable to have 2 antiviruses in one PC?
I have Avast! and Brand X Antivirus(with a real time protection)^^

Pls tell me^^

Thanks^^
-AnimeLover^^

Using 2 resident (real time) antivirus programs is not advisable. There will be conflicts between the 2 eventually. This will actually give you less protection.

cinchez,
if you don’t mind my asking, what is the brand X anvtivirus?

@ALL

Thanks 4 the immediate response^^
Still waiting for the most proper action^^

@Tarq57
My brand X antivirus is Avira Antivir Personal(free, version 9)

So wat should i do now?^^

Thanks
-AnimeLover^^

Well the basic i would say to only have a Anti Virus,Anti Spyware and Firewall its would be fair enought unless if u want u can add a site advisor but when Avast! got a web shield i didnt think its required. But if u want other protection like Charley got Spybot and Spyware Terminator then its up to you :slight_smile: Most of the time people say their computer is slow but well if u got like 10 protections didnt mean your more protected.

Mr.Agent

-= Antivir is on-demand [somehow but not when you click files since it has a read/write scan same to avast…] & avast is on-access… You might not have problems very often but still, there could sometimes be errors…

-= cinchez,
A, I’m in the northern part of Philippines… :wink:

   Are you a boy or a girl..?

   I think we're somehow spilling our private info.. Tara chat n lng sa YM..? ;)

I use Avast!-Real Time SAS Professional and Winpatrol Plus with no conflict or problems at all :slight_smile:

I think we're somehow spilling our private info
Already have ;D And used to live there for a brief time but not saying where-don't wanna spill any private info ;D

-= I used Ad-Aware + Avast before and I could say that I had lots of problems with it…

-= So, I see, that’s why your username is drhayden, right…? So, in that case, can you speak filipino languages…?

@ALL

Thanks again for the fast replies^^

Should i uninstall Avira and install a stand alone AS with no real time protection?^^(like MBAM)
