Afternoon Guys …
… right, re-tried Avast 4 today and this is what I got when all mail failed to connect.
Error Message :- “The connection to the server has failed. Account 'BT Internet, Server ‘127.0.01’, Protocol: POP3, Port:110, Secure (SSL) : No.
Socket Error 10061, Error Number :- 0x800CCC0E” >:(

:frowning: Does this help to find what is wrong? I didn’t have Avast set up to run immediately as I wanted to add it to ZoneAlarm before I went online but I didn’t get chance to add it because I couldn’t find the avast.exe to add to ZoneAlarm … so it could have been that but I checked and it was added and allowed so it wasn’t that.
I’ve disabled Avast for now.

No Lee, that wasn’t the problem because as soon as I disabled Avast and reset all my settings to what they are without Avast … It Worked!!!

The problem isn’t OE6 that I do know because everything is A-Okay when not using Avast and as I said all along my system just doesn’t seem to like Avast, but I’m determined to find out why Avast doesn’t work and just as determined to get it work if at all possibly

OK, that error you got basically meant that email was being blocked (maybe by avast).

I take it you are using the latest version of both outlook and avast (4.6.603).

Is there a icon showing (ashmai) when you try to receive your mail? (it will be near your system clock).

Anne, although this has nothing to do with your current problem I thought I would let you know nonetheless. Yes, its free for older customers to pull their hotmail into OE… for NOW. But as the article states; this spring Microsoft will begin charging even older customers who want to use OE (or any other program like Pegasus, Eudora, etc.) to read their Hotmail. Come this spring you will either have to pay to do so, or just view your hotmail online.

A quote from the article:

Existing Hotmail users who have set up mail retrieval from within Outlook or Outlook Express won’t be cut off immediately, but will have until next spring to upgrade to a paying account.

What ports is avast scanning in internet mail provider > redirect ?

BTW, do you happen to be using ‘BT Yahoo! Premium Mail’?

I actually checked with Hotmail and they have told me that the things happening with USA users is NOT happening in the UK for some reason.

I’ll check again on Monday, if you like.

Yes Lee … I AM using BT Yahoo Premium Mail as I have said several times … and it does come directly to OE6.

My husband’s basic mail with BT Yahoo does NOT come to OE6.

Odd… wonder why. Not a prob, just passing on info. My husband and I both scrapped Hotmail back in September when they made that announcement. Did the same 3 years ago when Yahoo pulled the plug too. Now I only use my servers email service.

Take it from me, everything is correct! You’re just covering old ground and my OS … well, I mentioned that in Message 17.

I won’t keep repeating myself … just wastes time and doesn’t help.
Everything you are suggesting, I tried back last year and I’ve used the Internet since the Daily Mirror set-up IC24.net … about 8 years ago.

Thing that keeps springing to mind is the mail protection wizard (as you said you have already ran), i take it your sure everything was set up right there?

Also, i can’t find out what port OE uses to get BT yahoo internet mail, do you know?

It is just normal pop/smtp mail so ports 25 and 110

The problem is something on that system is blocking Avast.
Most likely the firewall or other security software.

Well usual pop3 mail (incoming mail) mail uses port 110 which avast scans

And usual SMTP mail (outgoing) uses port 25 which avast scans

I just wanted to make sure avast was set up to the right ports, an idea popped into my head that BT yahoo INTERNET mail could use a non usual port (such as localhost).

I take it you have tried temporally disabling/shutting down your firewall, then tried receiving mail with avast open? (to make sure there is not a conflict).

Guys … you are not going to believe it but I opened ZoneAlarm and I added Avast4 manually(not automatically as usual), disabled AVG, enabled Avast4 and it seems to have worked … I won’t count my chickens before tomorrow
If still working for longer than 2 days then I know it is beaten … I think the problem was that it was being automatically to Zzone Alarm’s list of programs and then starting before I had chance to open Zone Alarm to allow it to access the Internet … so thank You to DukeNukem

Yes, i have had similar problems with Zonealarm on my older PC downstairs, it will do the oddest of things at times ::slight_smile:
