AVAST and Firefox : Youtube and Dailymotion slow :(

Hello,

I would like to ask if there is a way to optimize AVAST with Firefox to let Youtube and Dailymotion work the best.
With Firefox and AVAST (I had the problem with AVAST 5 too but with AVAST 6 the problem is worse :(), the videos on Youtube and Dailymotion buffer slowly and the videos pause very quickly, then I must wait 10 seconds before they start again, then 10 seconds later they pause again … The problem happens after watching 2-3 videos.
I thought it was only a firefox problem but just after the AVAST 6 release, when I had the problem with WMP11 becoming red, I uninstalled AVAST and I installed the trial version of KASPERSKY Antivirus. That antivirus is very heavy but I had no problems with the videos on youtube and dailymotion, the videos buffered very fast even after 15 videos!
I checked the connection speed on firefox with KASPERSKY, I use speedtest.fr, I had between 9 Mbps and 9.5 Mbps. With AVAST 5 and AVAST 6 the speedtest test finds between 4.5 and 5.5 Mbps (depending on the day, the time…) but rarely faster.
Now I installed again AVAST 6 (the 6.0.1091 build) and the videos on youtube seems to buffer a little slower than with AVAST 5. I don’t know if it could come from the script shield, but before resolving the problem with WMP11 becoming red, I uninstalled the script shield, and the videos on youtube buffered approximately like with AVAST 5 (so a little slow but not too slow). And yesterday I installed the complete version again (after removing the version without the script shield with awsclear) and I added the .dll files that resolve the WMP11 becoming red problem , and I watched many videos on youtube, and it is really more slower than before, I have to close firefox and open it again, and I can watch 1 video without problems then I have to close firefox again and open it again if I want to watch another video.
AVAST is very light compared to KASPERSKY, I don’t understand why it makes Firefox and Youtube & Dailymotion so slow :frowning:

disable stream scanning in the web shield options, or disable the web shield temporarily. Well this will only change something on downloads, but not on videos, as the web shield doesn’t scan videos, so your issue is weird. I don’t have it here.

ps: see my post here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=76820.msg636469#msg636469

Are all Avast setting at their default?

Mine are, except I also check for PUPS. I haven’t had any of the problems you mentioned in your post.

I just checked and I don’t have any Youtube problems, as long as I remember to disable NoScripts on the page.

why disable NS ??? >>> just allow what’s needed , ie youtube.com and ytimg.com
and yeah, you can set doubleclick as untrusted

Oh, ok. I’m still learning the ins and outs of that one. I don’t know half the time what to leave and what to disable lol. I don’t disable the whole thing, btw, just usually click ‘temporarily allow all this page’ if I’m sure it’s a safe page. I’d be more cautious on an unfamiliar page.

Is there some kind of database or something where I can find what script is what?

nope, basically, allow first domain levels + the ones that you know of - permanently - , and set as untrusted anything stats or ads related. You can easily tell by the names generally. If you made a mistake and something you expect doesn’t display on a web page, check again what you set as untrusted, you can always reverse what you did.

Hello,

Thank you very much

I always keep the default settings in AVAST.

So I don’t understand.

I don’t understand why the speedtest on Firefox (I only use Firefox) is more better with KASPERSKY that is too heavy. As I already wrote, with KASPERSKY I had between 9 and 9.5 Mbps. With AVAST I have between 4.5 and 5.5 Mbps :frowning: And I have no problems with Youtube with KASPERSKY :frowning:

I tried to disable the web shield, it is a little better but it is still slow :frowning:

I disabled the script shield, the videos seems to buffer a little faster, but it is not as fast as with KASPERSKY :frowning:

So I don’t know what to do :frowning:

Thank you very much,

@avragorn,

After uninstalling Kaspersky and rebooting, did you run Kaspersky’s Removal Tool? Parts of it may not have been fully removed and are still active.

Afterwards, you may have to do a clean install of Avast 6 again.

Hello,

Thank you,

Yes, I used the KAV removal tool but it didn’t work, it doesn’t work on my computer :frowning: So I used CCleaner. I posted about that on the KASPERSKY help forum and they never answered :frowning:

But as I already wrote : youtube and dailymotion are slow since I use Firefox, so since more than 1 year. And when I installed again AVAST 6 and after uninstalling the script shield, the videos buffered as fast (or as slow, because it was not really fast and it was not too slow) as before installing KASPERSKY.
But when I installed the complete AVAST 6 with the script shield, the videos buffered slower. I tried to disable the script shield, the videos seem to buffer a little faster.
I am not a computer specialist but I don’t understand why the script shield would make the videos buffer slower.
And I don’t understand why with KASPERSKY I had no problems with Youtube, the videos buffered very fast, even if that antivirus is very heavy, and why with AVAST (AVAST 5 and AVAST 6) that is a very light antivirus, the videos buffer slowly :frowning:
Before someone asks me, I just tried with Internet Explorer too, I have the same problem, so the problem maybe started since AVAST 5 :frowning:

And something different : since a few weeks, AVAST finds as suspicious this file : c:\Documents and Settings.…\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\54jikbr3.default\sessionstore-1.js
(the “…” are my first name and last name, I didn’t write them to avoid spams)

I don’t know if it makes my computer slower ?

sessionstore.js files are normally in the exclusion list of the file shield; not because they’re possible FPs but because otherwise they’re being scanned and scanned all over again. If you removed it from that list, put it back there, exclude read and write for it, but not execute.

I didn’t remove it from the list, I never touch to AVAST.

( since it is not about my problems with Firefox and Youtube, I prefer to keep on in the thread in the Virus section - maybe is it better to only write about my Firefox and Youtube problems here ).

no no forget it, if your FF profile is at the default location there’s nothing to do. The sessionstore file is already added to the exclusion list by default.

I wonder if you’d have better luck running the KAV removal tool from Windows Safe Mode.

Also, is your Shockwave Flash plug-in up to date? Current is 10.2.159.1. You can check it at https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ and also http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/.

Disabling Flash hardware acceleration may help. When viewing a Flash antimation (there’s one at the second link above), right click and select Settings. A popup will appear, uncheck Enable hardware accereration. This is easily reversed, if it doesn’t help.

Thank you very much,

Only Java was out of date (and I don’t understand why because Java opened last week because of an update and I updated it !).
Disabling Flash hardware acceleration doesn’t help much :frowning:
I don’t understand :frowning: I know I already wrote that, but with KASPERSKY that is a very heavy antivirus, I don’t have any problems, the videos load very fast.
About KAV remover, I tried in safe mode. I had problems because of KASPERSKY AV being heavy, someone from the KASPERSKY forum advised me to uninstall the AV and install it again, so he told me how to use KAV REMOVER and told me to use it in safe mode. But it doesn’t work.

Sadly, if Kaspersky isn’t fully uninstalled, it will interfere with any other antivirus you do install. I don’t know why the tool doesn’t run on your machine. I guess that it is possible that the uninstall of Kaspersky via Add/Remove Programs fully did it’s job, but then the removal tool should state that in some fashion.

Ccleaner found and removed many elements staying after the KASPERSKY removing with Add/Remove. So I don’t think there are interactions between the 2 antiviruses now.
I can prove it : after uninstalling KASPERSKY, I installed AVAST 5 (until the problem with WMP11 be resolved), and Youtube worked exactly like before installing KASPERSKY, so not very fast, but a little faster than now.
Since I installed the full AVAST 6 version the videos load slower.

edit : I just checked my connection speed, it is approximately 7.5 Mbps now. But Youtube videos still load slowly :frowning:

It seems there is an awful lot of things that don’t work on your machine. FWIW, I’ve found Avast 6 to be faster than Avast 5, all while adding more features. Perhaps someone could look at your machine remotely. I’m not skilled at such an undertaking.

Yes, maybe  Thank you
But why the videos on youtube load much faster with KASPERSKY than with AVAST ?

c’est un hasard je sais pas, laisse tomber cette piste, Avast ne ralentit pas le débit video, j’ai jamais vu ça arriver.
