Does the free version of Avast have its own firewall? The reason I’m asking is because I ran troubleshooting about my Windows Firewall and it showed it wasn’t using it but a different firewall. I thought my router might have one but I called my ISP, talked to a Tech and he told me it didn’t so I don’t know what kind it’s using because I have never used any Private Firewall.
I’ve checked this several times during the past few months. When I click on Window’s Firewall it won’t even open and has been this way for months.
I really don’t know. The information might on the bottom of my router but their is no way I can raise it up high enough to read what it says. On the top it show’s WPS?
I just remembered where to look to see if my Window’s Firewall was turned on. Went to control panel, system and security then the action center which showed it’ is. :-[
It appears you are running a wireless network of some sort. WPS is easily broken and, among other things, a pedophile can use that to access to your wi-fi network and download and distribute child pornography when using it. Expect a visit from your local police or the FBI if that should ever happen and a very rough time explaining it wasn’t you that did this if this should ever happen.
The only truly secure wi-fi connections are always the highest level one; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Access WPA2 is the one you want, not WPA, WPA is easily broken and hacked easily. As it is not clear, (you have not said) just looking out for you and wish you the best here. Older routers do not come with WPA2 protection, just so you know.
If you can either look for the router name and number on Google, or post it here you can, or we can, look this up for you.
I do know my router is password protected and no one other than myself knows what it is. One of our neighbor’s had his internet shut off and he tried to get a signal from mine but was unable to. He’s now getting a signal from another neighbor who has a NetGear (may have misspelled that) router.
In order for anyone to actually use your network to do nefarious things, they would have to be very close to you. Either next door or in the case of apartment housing, still in an adjoining apartment. Home wireless routers just don’t put out that strong of a signal.
McChain is correct in saying that WPS security is much more easily hacked than the newer WPA2 but it’s better than nothing. There are some networks around me that show in my available connections (as very poor strength) that have no security in place at all and that’s crazy. Somebody could be in a car parked outside your house and access your network
I have a Grand-Daughter who comes here around once a month and she always brings her IPad, can’t remember for sure what it is, but she can’t get a signal from my router. She can get a signal from one of our neighbors NetGear though. Just found the name of my router and it’s Arris TG852.
