My question(s) is not directly related to Avast! but I don’t see any other forum category it would fit.
I am on DSL and have a Motorola Netopia DSL Modem. The modem functions as a hardware firewall and I use the “SilentRunning” modem security setting. I have found that GRV “ShieldsUp” gives me a rating of “Stealth/Passed”.
I do not use a software firewall and was wondering if I even need to? Am I still exposed to any security risks by not running a software firewall? If I have a hardware firewall such as a DSL modem, do I need a software firewall as well?
Maybe this would be best addressed on a Netopia Modem forum, but I wanted Avast! user input as well. Thanks !!!
yes you do need a software firewall, as your router firewall doesn’t offer outbound protection: ie, if you got a trojan installed on your system, your hardware firewall won’t stop it from connecting. Also, a software firewall will bring you a far more user friendly configuration to control what your applications do etc…
I use a Netopia 3346N DSL modem, and have it configured in bridge mode with a wireless router behind it so I can use a software firewall more conveniently. The modem is actually set to “Clear Sailing”, which you can use to make your Netopia just a NAT router. As Logos pointed out, a software firewall gives you the ability to filter outbound traffic by application, so you can prevent programs from calling home or malware that might have slipped through from accessing the internet. It also offers you the ability to set up “pinholes” much more easily, for applications that need to allow inbound connections (active ftp, skype, games, …). If you search here under something like “best firewall” you will find a lot of discussions and recommendations for firewalls that work well with Avast!, are usually free, and at a minimum allow a free trial to see which one you find more comfortable.
I will take the prudent side. It depends on your needs. If you don’t do much online transactions, like banking at home, or any of that stuff where it involves money and privacy, then chances are you might not need a firewall. The router firewall is good enough. But if you do those stuff, then you are better off with a software firewall. It will also depend on your surfing habits, and the security tools that you use. If you have enough tools like regularly scanning with Avast, MBam, SAS and other on demand scanners, then again, you might not need it. It will depend totally on how you go about your surfing habits and what you do with your PC. Cheers.
