The ticket I raised with COMODO:
https://support.comodo.com/index.php?/Default/Tickets/Ticket/View/4006645, They seem to hint in the most recent response as to a possible incompatibility with a recent AVAST update which is plausible (given that Avast specfically warns about this I’ve been told.), (but confusingly given that I’ve had no issues with an XP suitable version of Zone Alarm), and perhaps unsurprisingly, COMODO suggested I use their Anti Virus instead (with no indication in the ticket that their AV component still supported XP SP3).
So I’m still no further on in determining HOW or WHY AVAST and COMODO interacted, The concern was naturally that something COMODO was attempting to do legitimately, was something conflicting with what AVAST was doing, or that COMODO was doing something that was in effect jamming AVAST (potentially using a technique which could be exploited by other software with less reputable intent.)
I appreciate the basic AVAST download is “uncharged” but machine crippling interactions are something I consider to be a glitch worthy of further investigation, sadly I don’t have the tools or expertise for this.
To nail the issue definitively, would probably need a clean-install of a debug version of XP SP3 inside a virtual system, followed by current versions of the ‘uncharged’ download Avast and Comodo ( http://download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/5025/standalone/cfw_installer.exe ), I don’t currently have access to a VM, and I don’t necessarily have access to a debug version of XP (not a developer). I also doubt there would be anyone here that’s got the free time to do unpaid support or debugging on this issue, given that XP SP3 is effectively end-of life.
Maybe it is just too much to expect uncharged (I’ve stopped calling them ‘free’) components from different vendors to work together on an end-of-life’d OS?
