avast and outlook

I have had Avast on my system for over a year now and have had no problems with it until just recently. After having recently downloaded either the most recent program upgrade I suddenly am having nothing but problems using outlook. The server settings are continually being clobbered by Avast. I go in and correct them and the next time I start Outlook they are messed up again. My incoming and outgoing settings are set to 127.0.0.1 instead of what they should be, my account name has the incoming server setting appended to it, and my outgoing setting has the same information doubled on it. This was not happening before I updated the last time and started happening immediately after I did so. My IP tells me that the 127.0.0.1 is an anti virus program interfering with the settings.

I need a fix or I will have to remove Avast.

What is your OS ?
What is your email client, MS Outlook or Outlook Express, I suspect OE ?
With Win95, Win98 or WinME the account settings need to be modified to be able to the the Internet Mail proxy so emails can be scanned ‘before’ they arrive in your inbox.

With Win95, Win98 or WinME you should have:
pop3 server= smtp server = 127.0.0.1
username = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com
smtp authentication enabled and the username there = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com

OK with these so called clobbered settings are you able to collect and send email, you didn’t say ?
If not what error messages are you getting ?
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe internet access ?

I’m using Win98 and have had no problems until the last upgrade.

What you are showing is what ends up in my server settings, and at which point it quits working and I can no longer upload or download at that point.

I have been using Zonealarm from th every beginning and have never had any problems with it in the entire time I have used it.

This is the error message I am getting now
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your User Name was rejected. Account: ‘Jerimia’, Server: ‘127.0.0.1’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR Cannot connect to POP server Postoffice.worldnet.att.net (255.255.255.255:110), gethostbyname error 11001’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91

ZoneAlarm sometimes makes problems after updating avast. Try deleting firewall rules for the mail scanner (ashMaiSv.exe) and let them be created again after you check mail next time.

After a great deal of fiddling, I finally found out what had happened. The last update either changed or added an operation that the firewall didn’t recognize, and unusual for ZA, I never got a warning or notification. I wouldn’t have realized it was there except that I was checking parameters and found a new one I had never seen before. when I corrected it everything went back to normal mode. This is the first time in all the time that I have been running the two programs that I have had anything like this happen.

Program updates will almost every time trigger a permission check by your firewall because a component has changed that had previously been granted access. Why ZA didn’t ask permission I don’t know.

The main thing is that the problem is resolved (?).
