I cant get system restore to work on my w7 system, and while doing much digging it transpires that it is quite an issue with avast. I have reluctantly uninstalled it and replaced it, but has anyone got particular experience with this.thank you
I have no problem with System Restore on my Windows 7 system with avast!
Is it 32bit or 64bit Windows 7 ???
I haven’t had any problems with it, in fact I have disabled system restore on my XP Pro system as I don’t feel it is that reliable (don’t do this unless you have something to take its place).
On my win7 netbook, it still has system restore enabled and I haven’t had any problems, creating new restore points or clearing old restore points, etc. This is with avast 6.0.945 and previously with 5.1.889.
Since you don’t say what avast version you are using, nor the versions that you are talking about were they are having/had a problem.
There was a period in one of the avast builds that there was a problem and disabling the self-defence module allowed it to be used, but that was resolved in another program update.
Thank you very much, my W7 is 64 bit I was using the current free version of avast, dont know what the number was.If it is no different I will revert back to avast. I think system restore problems seem to be something microsoft are sweeping under the table. do you know of other free programs that will do the same. Most seem to back up files in music and photos etc but not restore the computer programs. thank you
I suggest to disable system restore and use a decent backup application instead. What good is system restore if you can’t access it due to a really messed up OS, broken drive or something like that.
You need to look at drive imaging software, which make an exact copy of your partition/hard disk and this backup image can be restored. There are many different ones out there some are even free, but I have no personal experience of any other drive imaging applications other than the one I use ‘Drive Image’ and old version that still works on my XP Pro system. It was the last version from PowerQuest before Symantec bought out the company.
There is another application called Drive Image, not by PowerQuest, I don’t know about that one.
I have a second hard drive on my Windows 7 system for backup and restore:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/backup-and-restore.aspx
I also have a bootable DVD CD that I created with it to enable booting to restore to the latest backup.
Another thing that can cause system restore problems in Windows 7 is third party Defrag software. Get something like Acronis True Image. I have my HD partitioned and takes about 8 min to reload image.
