Avast and Thunderbird 106 server & user settings change

After I run avast home edition, my smtp and pop3 settings of my primary email account change.

In Tools/account settings:

  1. my server name is replaced with 127.0.0.1

Should be: pop3.icdc.com

  1. User name becomes: username#pop3.icdc.com

Should be: my username

Cannot send or receive email until I change settings again.

This is on my primary email account; the other accounts always have 127.0.0.1 and the other settings and it works.

Anyone know if there are adjustments I can make in my primary email account settings to prevent this from happening? Have done the advanced settings thing and it hasn’t changed anything.

Using w’98 SE and XP .

Thank you. LK drkelly@icdc.com

This is correct with win98 in order to have avast scan email before they arrive in your inbox and is using the localhost proxy.

Ensure that your firewall (which one?) allows access for ashMaiSv.exe.

You might want to modify the details in 2. above to (User name becomes: username#pop3.ispname.com, should be: username) otherwise people will be able to identify your email address and these forums are publicly available.

Thank you, David, for taking the time to explain this.

This also happens with xp on my laptop.

I use zone alarm firewall. Am on dialup.

Is ashMaiSv.exe allowed access then?

You might find this useful as tbird (I don’t use it) may require you to set it up manually.

For Thunderbird, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=display;board=2;threadid=7913;start=0#msg64228

With Win95, Win98 or WinME you should have:
pop3 server= smtp server = 127.0.0.1
username = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com
smtp authentication enabled and the username there = mail.server.coml#user or
mail.server.com#user@server.com

However, with XP the email settings should be transparent. Try a forum search for Thunderbird, as this often crops up.

I’m sorry, I don’t know how to find out.

And… when I tried to check the box, received a message that my mail server doesn’t support authentication.

Thank you again. Lynn :-*

Check the Programs/Applications section of Zone Alarm (I don’t use it so you may need to check the help file) and see if it is blocked/denied access.

If you find the reference, just delete the entry and check your email, this should prompt ZA to ask permission for ashMaiSv.exe, allow it.
