Avast and Vista bad mix!!

Does anyone else find Windows Vista to be alot slower then Windows XP when viewing and transfering files from one pc to another on your network?

example when I open a folder with lots of files on one of my networked pc’s it takes for ever to show the icons of the programs where as on XP it was much faster. Also transfering the files from one pc to the other is slower.

I found out that Avast is causing ths. When I disabled Avast it was much faster and moush more like XP.

I prey this can be fixed! Or do I need to change an option or something?

They work fine together. I hardly notice it there. Had BitDefender 10 for Vista before, man, that was slow…

Well Avast is 100% slowing down downloading or transferring files from pc to pc.

I occasionally have to move huge numbers of files from one folder to another, and I make a point of pausing the standard shield while I do that. Makes quite a speed difference (moving means copying then deleting the original, so the shield would normally be quite busy).

I understand that Vista uses a different file system from my XP, so it might not work the same under Vista.

As far as I’m aware Vista still uses NTFS, the supposed new file system much hyped in the initial Vista features was quietly dropped. I believe they are still working on it for inclusion at some later time.

Just confirming David’s information about Vista using NTFS.

Is the transfer Vista to Vista, Vista to XP or XP to Vista? On which machine was avast turned off to accomplish the performance improvement?

I am running Avast on Vista.

And the transfer was to that Vista machine or from it?

Which avast providers do you have running and at what sensitivity level?

Have you tried turning off the providers one by one to determine which provider, when turned off, results in the performance improvement?

Avast was the first AV software during beta testing to fully operate under Vista. Its demand on CPU time is way less than others I won’t mention. I am not sure wht you are seeing, but during the about 9 months that we have had Avast to use with Vista I didn’t notice that problem.

Ok I did some testing and the cause of the slow down is settings in the Standard Shield “Scan Executed Programs” when I disabled that it was fast again. Can this be fixed?

If this can not be fixed I may have to switch to another AntiVirus software. :frowning:

I did not have this issue in XP only Vista.

Well that is the whole point of having resident on-access protection to scan files before they execute to prevent infection.

What is the sensitivity you have standard shield set to (Normal, the default, High or Custom) ?

What are the Scanner (Basic) and Scanner (Advanced) settings in Standard Shield (see images mine may differ slightly from yours) ?

What other security programs do you have installed ?

I think I am going to switch to Nod32. Avast is just slowing down my Vista pc. I have been very happy with Avast when using it on Windows XP but it just does not run as good on Vista as it did on XP :frowning:

Example just now I did a test. And when Avast is enabled icons in My Computer for Example apear so slow. Like the hard drive icons. When I disable Avast or even use another AntiVirus like Nod32 the icons apear instant.

I am paid up until December 2007 so maybe I will still use it on my XP computer for a while but as far as My Vista pc it looks like I will try Nod32.

I don’t know what is happening on your Vista system but it doesn’t seem to be the experience of other vista users who have contributed. If this were an issue across the board with vista I’m sure we would see more posts on the forums.

Finding out why the problem exists with your system but not others is the difficult part.

If you can answer the questions, perhaps we might be able to help.

standard shield set to Normal

my setup looks just like you pic.

The only other security programs would be Windowss Defender which is build into Vista.

Since as you say windows defender is built in, that is likely to impact on the others as well, unless they have disabled it.

The settings are close to the defaults so shouldn’t add much additional load.

I’m at a bit of a loss (hoped there might be something a little obvious) as I have zero vista experience. I hope one of the Alwil team pick up on this topic.
