Avast! and Windows Updates. [SOLVED]

Hello, This is a problem that exists for too long now… It was about time I report it.

Every time I start updating windows Avast! starts acting phony and block some processes that Microsoft starts to update my system, therefore a lot of updates just don’t install. I can’t stop the shields because I’m afraid… I’ve had too much of bad experience with Viruses back in the day to take that Risk. And because those updates won’t install I just hide them, but the count is getting bigger, here’s a screenshot of the updates I’ve hidden because I can’t install due to Avast! blocking them:

You have a couple of choices: Keep on clicking on allow which works on my XP PRO SP3 system or you can turn off Avast for 10 minutes or an hour to allow for everything to download. As Windows Update is Microsoft and you have to use IE to get to it, viruses are not an option unless you are already infected, in which case you need to get a bootable CD with serious anti-malware software to clean things up.

It doesn’t sound like an avast snafu. Have you ran a scan using MalwareBytes?

avast has never caused any problems with Windows Update for me.
Another idea is to do a repair of avast.
Control Panel> add/remove or uninstall> double click avast> scroll to and click on repair> reboot.

Hip-Hop

You only have to set Behavior Shield to " Auto-Decide " or deactivate it during Micrsofot Update. Avast! Behavior Shield has a problem with how the Microsoft updates install when set to " Ask " if you are running XP. This updates are all related to .NETFRAMEWORK and some Silverlight. Well, my case though.

Regards.

Well it should be on auto decide by default, if it isn’t then someone has changed it.

Hip-Hop_Blond you dont mention which shield of avast is blocking the updates ? as others have mentioned if it is behaviour shield then set to auto decide ( default ) if you’ve changed multiple settings in avast you can restore all defaults through settings.

I have never had a problem with Avast and Windows Updates, running Windows XP. Maybe once or twice, I lost my wireless Internet connection, but a reboot fixed that.

Jack

Thank you all for the help, yes my behaviour shield is set to “Ask”, but I like it that way as it costs problems if it’s setted to Auto-Decide, but during the update it doesn’t ask me anything (@Iroc). I don’t need to redo my settings/repair the program as I’ve been very delicate with them and they aren’t causing problems. I keep my computer in shape and avast scans every no and then and there is no suspicious behaviour nor processes I don’t know about going on in the task manager and Avast! is protecting me all the time so I don’t think I need to install Malwarebytes, I have full trust in my Avast! (@Para-Noid) :).

Jack you are Correct.

Nord, I do have Hiren’s Boot CD which will be helpful in case I get infected from Microsoft Updates (which had happened before) and I think I would be able to battle the viruses and damage afterwords with it. So I followed your advise - deactivated the shields, crossed my fingers and started the updates… the processes acted the same way, it turned out Avast! didn’t block anything it just use to increase the memory usage during the process, nothing more. Those 10 updates didn’t install anyway…

I guess it’s time to build a new PC I can’t keep on upgrading this old bucket :stuck_out_tongue: I’ sorry for blaming Avast! I never should have doubted it, nor those probably 4 years of using it already :stuck_out_tongue: I won’t take it up to Microsoft’s forum, because they won’t be as helpful and they’ll probably tell me the same. I’ll start saving right after I repair my Netbook’s LCD Screen

Thanks to everyone for their help and sorry again for blaming Avast!.
