Hi everyone,
I am new here to the forum. I am running Windows 7, I purchased Avast Antivirus Pro 6 yesterday, its a great program except every second it scans. The little avast icon near my clock is constantly spinning and its slowing down my computer. When I go on web sites, it scans and it makes it go slower. Even now typing this message the words aren’t coming out quick enough because every letter is being scanned(I guess thats what its doing) I love the program because its protecting my computer but this constant scan is ridiculous. Is there something I can do so that it won’t constantly do this. Thanks so much!
Which version…??
Have you played with any of the default settings ?
Also what other security programs are you running?
Its Avast Antivirus 6 Pro…latest version of the updated program…not running anything else…just that…not sure what I have to do in the settings to change it…I mean I want to be protected but the constant scan is ridiculous…it slows down my machine.surfing the web, even typing is affected
Have you tried a repair of avast? control panel/add remove programs/double click avast and when you get the popup scroll down to repair, click and ok.
You didn’t say if you had played with any of the avast default settings, you can restore default via settings/ trouble shooting/default settings
Yes, ok - we already know that, but which version…???
There was a bug in an earlier version, so be sure you have tha latest build. (6.0.1125)
Scanning constantly is no usual behaviour…!!
I installed avast yesterday (switched from MSE) and noticed that my computer has been lagging. I have a very fast computer BTW. I have restarted my computer multiple times.
Today I was looking through some photos using Windows Photo Viewer and when I click the next button to the next photo it would say “loading” for almost a full second. Before I could click it as fast as my finger could go and the photos would show instantly. Now it is super slow.
I right clicked the avast icon in the system tray and disabled avast and then my photos were showing instantly again! So I know avast is causing the problem.
The strange thing is, I re-enabled avast and the photos are still showing instantly, no “loading” time. I restarted the computer and it is still instant.
What is going on? did I fix it by disabling and re-enabling it, or did I break something else by disableing and re-enabling?
Did you uninstall or disable MSE? Any previous antivirus?
Yes. I uninstalled MSE. I also keep a very clean system. Also, this clean Windows 7 x64 install is about two months old.
I suggest to start a new thread as this one is from May.
I never know what to do. If I start a new thread, people complain that there is already a thread pertaining to this. If I reply to an apparent relevant thread, people complain that it is to old.
I’m just going to consider this case closed. I’m probably going to install avast on two or three other computers. As part of the install process, I may just add “disabling and re-enabling” as part of the install checklist of things to do, or I may test them to see if they have the same problem out of curiosity, as this may be a bug, or just an isolated incident, but there is no incentive for me to do so since this doesn’t seem to be a widespread problem.
What do you mean…?? You haven’t started any new topic on this forum yet.
Anyway, it was just a suggestion…
u complain about constant scans…well that shouldnt slow u down.
the on-access scanning is the power of avast and hence u should be happy that u have a AV that doesnt trust anything unless it is scanned (keeping u more safe) ;D
as far your problem with the slowdown is a topic can we see the system specs…
how much RAM?
Hard disk space available?
@Stormprobe,

[EDIT]
I corrected the mistake of the link I made (see next craigb’s comment). Thank’s Craig.
