I’m think that if you install any of the older versions you’ll only be forced to update to the newest version anyway.

This is true. Other users have tried this and the program automatically updated it to the newest version because the older ones are not supported anymore. You can install the current version and do a CUSTOM install (install only what you want). In the Settings of Avast, set the Programs for “Ask” when there is a program update…you will be notified of it but it will not install unless you allow it to.
