avast! appears to cause pc to crash

My pc has been locking up for some time. Fairly infrequently until recently. The symptom is the screen freezes, no mouse movement is possible no is the keyboard. Now it’s happening more frequently. The message in the event log is:
"AAVM - scanning error: tdiUrlBlockCommThread: DeviceIoControl [IOCTL_ASWTDI_URLBLOCK_REQUEST/1] failed, 0000007A. "
The source of the error is avast!.

Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be? Is it a virus infection?

TIA

Dave Reah

It seems a conflict… which was your previous antivirus? How did you remove it?
Any other security program that could interfere?

The aswtdi is an avast driver.

I was previously using AVG. I want through the normal uninstall.

I’ve checked and can’t find anything to do with AVG running.

Use the AVG Removal Tool to completly remove AVG. After that, you shold reboot.

If the problem continues, uninstall Avast from the control panel, reboot, use the Avast! Removal Tool and then reboot. After that, reinstall Avast! Home/Pro. Then you should reboot again.

If that doesen’t work, ask another user. ;D
