Avast article

Hey, I wrote this article for a website called helium. I said that avast was the best free anti-virus program out there. So read it please, and let me know what you think about it. Give me some feedback. Thanks

Hi, ForestLomn, welcome to the forum.

Not a bad basic article. Written with slightly rose tinted glasses, in some respects. I don’t know the site you are writing for, nor its target viewers, but reading the article one could be forgiven for thinking “If I have Avast, all will be well.” It will certainly offer good protection, but no AV I know of yet can guarantee 100% security, which is the impression the article leaves one with.

Kudos for mentioning the boot scan; this is a feature that certainly can give Avast an edge over tricky malware.
You could also have mentioned that the detection and removal engine in the free version are the same as used in the Pro version (unlike some of the other free-version AV’s), and that it has antispyware and a rootkit scanner built in.

I notice in your article concerning removal of malware you mention the older scanners, which is OK, but to tell the truth not many folk who are in the business of removing malware use AdAware any more. It just doesn’t cut the mustard.
(Actually, the real gurus use analysis tools to see what i running that shouldn’t be, and then write scripts or use other means to remove them.)
Better anti malware tools these days are MBAM and/or Superantispyware.
You also mention in that article that one of the free AV offerings is Kaspersky. To the best of my knowledge, the only free tool associated with Kaspersky is the AVZ scanner/removal tool. This is darned good, but you have to know what you are doing with it.

Any other comment I have is of the “nit-pick” variety, concerning spelling/syntax/vocab etc, which I’m sure you can work out yourself, over time, if you are intending any kind of career in writing.

Hi ForestLomn

Good for you. The article is convincing. You write it as you believe it. Many of the points you mention are familiar to us here on the forum. The antivirus solution you are writing about is ideally suited to the people you are writing to.
