PS. For me, it’s not a problem, just want to let you know.
The update: automatic (update now), is effectively a manual update, then it should use the existing connection settings.
The avast update doesn’t use your browser, it acts independently of your browser, but it requires the proxy details if you have to use a proxy to connect to the internet.
The auto detect doesn’t seem to work well trying to get the info from IE. It is best to set it to either ‘Direct connection (no proxy),’ if you don’t connect to the internet by a proxy, or Specify proxy server, if you have to use a proxy.
What is your firewall ?
When do you get the “Cannot connect to downloadXXX.avast.com (unknown:80)” error (?) as this error message is often associated with the firewall blocking. If it is very close to the boot, then it is possible your firewall is blocking internet access (even though you have a connection established) until the boot has completed. Comodo firewall does this and possibly some other firewalls. So a later manual update wouldn’t be blocked by the firewall.
