I just wanted to thank Awil for this great product! I have used all types up antivirus programs from the best paid versions to the freewares and this has proven to be the best. I have searched far and wide for an antivirus that is both effective at preventing and removing infections and at the same time won’t weigh my computers down. The best paid antiviruses (or supposed best), like Kaspersky, Norton, McAfee, etc., are very resource hungry and I just found them to be to overbearing on my machines, especially using Vista! The only paid antivirus that I remotely liked was NOD32, but I have heard some not to flattering things about this new version. So I think I am going to stay away from that for a while. As for the freebies, I have tried AVG. It is very light on resources, but I have gotten burned by that more than once so I decided to try Antivir Classic. It is not quite as light, but I read that it had great detection rates on several websites and blogs. I used it for a few months, but got tired of the very annoying pop-ups during the very, very sluggish updates along with the disappearing umbrella icon. So I then moved to PC Tools Free Antivirus, that was only on my system for about 5 minutes. It completely devoured my system resources. I read some where to try Avast! Home Edition. And let me tell you I have never been happier! Immediately after installation I performed a system scan, and it found 5 trojans on the first machine which was previously running Antivir! Needless to say I installed it on all of my machines and it found even more “baddies” that has went completely unnoticed by Norton and AVG! And in the last few days it has saved me several times from installing some bad files on to my machine! It is the perfect blend of resource utilization and protection. I love the incremental updates, I have already had 2 today! And so far, a month into using the product, I couldn’t be happier! I am probably going to invest in the Pro version to get the scheduled scans (which I kind of miss), and the script blocker. But for right now I feel totally secure and I will be sure to recommend this product to anyone searching for a reliable, effective antivirus program.
After all the rambling…I am just curious, what exactly is Avast!'s detection rates? I understand it can be totally subjective, but I am just curious as how it supposedly rates against the big boys. I have read somewhere it is 87%, others have said 96%, and others 99%! I am just curious, as I know it just works for me!
