Avast Background Services are not running...

Hi Guys,

Before I posted this I took a look on the site and saw various fixes for old versions where this issue was occuring. I’ve so far un-installed, cleaned and re-installed Avast and I’m still getting the same issue! Every few minutes whilst I am browsing the internet I am getting an X in the Avast Icon near the clock. I have to manually enable the services and then I can finally continue to browse the internet…this issue repeats every few minutes or so. I’ve upgraded to Avast Internet Security as I thought this may fix the issue but hasn’t.

I’m running Windows XP SP3 and Avast 12.3.2280 (12.3.3154.23)
Virus Definition: 161126-0

Please can someone help as this is a really annoying problem!

Did you use avastclear before installing avast again ?

  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

I didn’t try Avast Clear, I will try that now and re-install.

I had no other AV software installed.

I’ve got Spy Bot and used to have SuperAnti Spyware, since un-installing Superanti Spyware I think is when the issue occured.

You need to drop Spybot…!!

Really get rid of Spybot?! I’ve never had any issues with both of them running before…

  1. I’ve just un-installed Avast using Avast Clear.
  2. I will reboot now and re-install…

Yep.

okay guys I’ve re-installed jus testing now if the problem continues my next step is to remove SpyBot

Hi Guys,

I’ve been using Avast now for an hour or so and the issue seems to have gone! I guess a re-install did the trick!

Give it a day or two and see if it keeps working properly.

Thanks! it was too good to be true! I managed to browse the internet last night for a few hours and again this morning. Just now I’ve had the same issue “Avast background Services are not running”.

I’ve un-installed Spybot and will report back. I was looking through the logs on the PC and I have the following errors;

The Avast Antivirus service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

The Avast Antivirus service entered the running state.

The Avast Antivirus service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: Run the configured recovery program.

The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Run the configured recovery program) after the unexpected termination of the Avast Antivirus service, but this action failed with the following error:
No recovery program has been configured for this service.

Hi Guys,

Still getting this issue although it is every few hours now…I’ve installed FarBar (As mentioned on a previous thread) and will post logs shortly…
Any other advice on how to proceed?

I’m tempted to download an old version of avast from filehippo and just disable programme updates?

Run Farbar and attach two log files to your next post.
Let’s see if we can find something that shouldn’t be there.

Thanks for the reply I will do this next. I’ve run a registry cleaner as when I un-installed SuperAnti Spyware it left behind some processes!

I’ve also installed an older version of Avast and disabled programe updates lets see how I get on!

You should see what avast left behind after removing (and using avastclear)
Over 800(!) registry entries.

Hi Guys,

So far I’ve been using 12.3.2280 Build (12.3.3154.23) Release Date 19/08/2016 and have not had any issues so far fingers crossed!
Which appears to be the same one I was using in the first place? I’m a bit confused but lets see what happens

OK, sounds good.

I’ve been running avast for a day now and no issues I think this is possibly what happened;

  1. Un-installed Super Anti Spyware

  2. Left over SAS process was causing Avast to play up

  3. Ran Registry clean-up and problem went away!
