Looks like avast is doing a better job of detection than McAfee on ‘Stration’ variant (aka ‘Warezov’)… where Stration is one of the most active families now with nearly 300 variants
A good friend of mine, Harry Waldron (Msft MVP), posted scanning results on his security blog. See this link for details.
Who pay for McAfee?
Me great love is AVAST4Home,and it cost nothing.
On me PC found McAfee 1year totally 0 virus.
Since 1.5 month have Avast Found 7 virusses and Troyan Horses.
Who is sleeping here?
Avast is much better,no doubt!
Greetings CactusJ.
Cactusj i completely agree with u…avast is much better…i didn’t even try mcafee coz i knew how gd it was…in my opinion the only gd antivirus that deserves as commercial is nod32…and the only gd internet suite is bitdefender…but i love avast home and its totally free…
Avast!, good detection without the bloat so often found
with most software. This message is being posted with an
ancient (please, don’t laugh) Acer Aspire Pentium 133 running
Avast!, Opera and Win 95…try that with McAfee or Symantec ;D.
Plus, free support given in this forum that is better (even when my
autistic brother hijacked my account and started harassing people) than
what the others make you pay for.
Well, you obviously haven’t tried McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i.
I still defend avast! as good AV, but saying McAfee sucks a** is not true either.
They have one of the best AV experts in this industry and their detection is also very good along with heuristics. Reaction times may also vary. Sometimes they are also the first to obtain samples that others haven’t even heard of, let alone get them. Same for Symantec.
i agree that mcafee is gd…it’s one of the best antivirus programs…or they say so(check this http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/?ttreng=1&ttrkey=antivirus )mcafee has a pretty gd detection and its detection may be better than avast’s…BUT(a big but),their support and their system requirements(it uses a lot of ram) are very bad…i don’t know about u,but if i’d like to buy an antivirus,i would never buy mcafee…Generally, the best antivirus depends on the pc(the OS,the RAM,the proccessor etc),the user(his pc experience etc) and the requirements of the user(how he wants his AV to be)… i’ve tried norton IS 2007 and i don’t like it at all…if u prefer mcafee it’s ok and i’m sure that it must suit perfectly to ur machine and to ur needs…but i don’t want to slow down my machine even if i have 1gb RAM and i want my pc to have the best performance so i’m going with AVAST(and i know that AVAST isn’t the best AV solution)
Yes, McAfee’s VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i is about the only version I would consider paying for. VS-7.03 was their last good product IMHO – but it got to the point that everyone using Win98 (or WinME) were being bogged down. I was a volunteer moderator on their help forum for over three years – that is until I couldn’t keep my PC running at a decent speed. Avast was one of the AV’s the mods discussed among ourselves as being excellent.
Yes the older mcafee versions were good. I used vs6 for a few years, until that infamous 4400 engine. I used that same version to clean out a very badly infected xp machine about a year ago. It’s still running on it. However from what I’ve read, the new 5000? engine isn’t fully compatible with the older vs versions, so avast will probably be installed.
It was on the mcafee forum that I heard about avast!. I switched just before RickF. And unless mcafee does something extraordinary, I’ll stick with avast!.
RickF
Do you ever check in at their forum? I have and it doesn’t seem the same any more.
Yes I do check in sometimes. Their new 5000 engine doesn’t run on the older VS 6 + 7 correctly. Some claim it works, but not reliably. No sense in taking a chance in getting infected.
