Avast blocking internet

I just installed avast today and sometimes when i turn on my computer, Avast will block the internet :-[. Note, this only happens SOMETIMES. And this only seems to happen when im browsing the internet; all the other programs that require internet access can get it (like windows update, msn messenger, etc). I can get around it by turning off the web shield, but i really dont want to. I also have Windows Firewall enabled, so perhaps that may have something to do with it? :-\ I’m running on Windows XP Pro SP2, by the way.

So could somebody please help me with this?

Welcome to the forum.

avast doesn’t have the ability to block internet access, nor does windows firewall.

Since you just installled avast, what did you have for an antivirus program before and hoe did you uninstall it?

I didn’t have any other antivirus programs on here before… I was looking for a good and free antivirus program and my friend recommended avast.

Any other firewall besides windows firewall? Windows firewall doesn’t monitor outbound traffic. So I think we can safely rule out that firewall.

How about a router?

No av and you where surfing the net? Maybe other problems.

No av=?? No avast? O.O

My router is a linksys WRT54G, and i’m currently using the wireless aspect of it.

No av = no antivirus program.

Does the router have a firewall?

Nope. The router has no firewall.

The router that you listed above does indeed have a firewall …

The Router protects your PC from most known Internet attacks with a powerful Stateful Packet Inspection firewall.

The above quote is from the link below about the linksys WRT54G router …
