I am new to Avast version 4.8 Pro, build Nov2008 (4.8.1290) Lately I have noticed that it takes unusually longer times to load a page when using my Opera Browser and sometimes it just continues to stall, not even a sever error! Looking at the interactivity of the Avast icon in the systray I will temporarily disable the On-access Protection and my 10 MB Cable connection soars again! Anyone have any suggestion to remedy this? I must have missed something in my reading and overlooked something. It is very annoying to say the least. Excellent software
Restart Avast. Right Click on Avast Icon and STOP WEB PROVIDER. See if that helps…
Let Avast Support know. You can Double Click on Avast Icon, Details and TERMINATE
any Shield (provider) you do not want to run. Personally I do not run Outlook, P2P, or
Instant Messenger Shields as I do not use those programs.
If you just RIGHT CLICK and STOP the Provider will restart next boot. If you TERMINATE
then the Provider will remain off until you start it again.
Which other security programs are installed?
Which was your previous antivirus? How did you uninstall it?
Which is your firewall and operational system?
Sorry it took so long to get back to reply!
The only other security I have running is Agnitums Outpost Pro 2009 and I never have any problems with it. System is behind a 10 Mb cable with a Lynksys cable router and using the Port Forward Software. XP Pro is stripped down using XPlite but updated regularly using Secunia PSI. Like I stated earlier in my post, if I disable Avast from the icon in the systray it runs lightning fast, never any problems! However this doesn’t occur 24/7! Just at times when I am doing research, go figure! lol I will mess around a bit and do some more reading up on the software. I gotta hand it to Avast, I used to be a AVG Pro LIFER but now I prefer Avast to everything I tried! Thanks for all the replies and help and Merry Christmas to all Randy
Well I too use OP Pro 2009, and see no such impact on browsing and I’m on dial-up. Now I like my firewall to be just a firewall and not all things to all men.
To that end I have disabled the Anti-Spyware (may already be disabled automatically) and Web Control. So dry disabling the bells and whistles elements and see if that improves the situation.
Maybe you can try AVG Remover http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools if it was installed in the past in your computer.
Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service). Although, ashServ.exe sends ping packets to find out if the Internet connection is alive. You can turn this off by checking the “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet” box in the avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) page.
