Avast blocks Internet browsers (Opera Firefox Internet Explorer)

Hi,

I have a problem with avast 6.0.1.
After updating from version 5.1.889 to 6.0.1 my Internet browsers (Opera, Firefox, IE) are blocked. They cannot load Internet pages.
They start working normally after disabling Avast Web Shield. So the problem must be related with Avast 6.0.1.
Avast and Win 7 are updating normally with Web Shield enabled. Dropbox works fine too. i had no isues with Avast 5.1.889.

  • Computer is running on Win7 professional 64 bit
  • No firewalls installed
  • Windows firewall disabled

Any solution to the problem?
Or should I roll back to version 5.1.889 ?

You can’t update from version 5 to 6. You need to uninstall 5 completely and than install version 6. Please do so and tell us if you still have a problem.

I believe the problem with updating from 5 to 6 was only with the beta version of 6, once it became a stable release you were able to update over the top but in the case of the op here being that his system is now messed up a clean install is the way to go, try the new prerelease as it’s very good.

There isn’t any problem updating from 5 to 6.
or from 4.8 to 6 for that matter.

I’m pretty much sure that I’ve updated from version 5 to 6. Nevertheless, I have uninstalled version 6.0.1. restarted computer, cleaned registry with CCleaner, and installed fresh copy of Avast 6.0.1. Unfortunately, the problem remains. If i want my browsers to load pages, i must turn off Web Shield.

It must be problem with Avast compatibility with Win7 64bit, since i don’t have this issue with Avast 6.0.1 on WinXP SP3 on other computer.

Why not?

It is possible to update from 5 to 6. I’ve done it few days ago. But It’s not important.

Im intersted in solving this problem with blocked browsers. Should I try to change some settings or it’s a bug that will be fixed in next release. In that case I’ll rollback to 5.1.889 and wait for the fix.

I use win 7 64 bit and no problem on mine, why do you have the windows firewall turned off ? did you reboot after installing ?

I rebooted, but problem still remains. I turned off Windows Firewall because I use Commodo Firewall. But right now i have Commodo uninstalled too, because I didn’t know what’s causing the problem. Now i realized it must be avast.

Have you tried the link i supplied in reply 2, it would be wise to turn on the windows firewall before you install again and make sure that all remnant’s of comodo are gone.

I’ve installed new version, but problem remains.

But, if I uncheck Scan web (HTTP) traffic in Real Time Shields/Web Shield problem is GONE and Opera is working well. When i do this Avast shows message that system is secured. Does it means that Web Shield is active and protects me, or I disabled it this way.

Your not scanning your web traffic now so thats no good, im out of ideas so best to wait for one of the other evangelists to pop in i think.

If that doesn’t resolve it then I would suggest a clean reinstall:

  • Download the latest version of pre-release of avast, 6.0.1021 http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1021/setup_av_free.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall the current version of avast! (using uninstall a program, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

A clean install would be best as I use Windows 7 64bit and do not have a problem with IE9 nor Google Chrome.
