AVAST boottime

I am using version 4.8.1169, working great so far.

I have a question witch may seem silly.
I have just updated to broadband a couple of days ago.
Just wondering when i bootup the computer, should i leave the modem turned of, until the computer is fully booted or not.

If i left it on would i still be protected from viruses etc as it is booting up,(doing a rootkit scan) if the Internet was active.

As you can see by my questions i am not the sharpest tool in the shed.

No need to turn off the modem if you are using a firewall, the firewall should block all connections while the system is booting up.
And yes avast! will do a scan of whatever files are getting loaded at startup.
