I have a new lic. When I try to register, a window pops open that cannot be read. I pretty much can only hit the escape key to clear it. If I move all windows to the side so that nothing is below where where the registration window will appear then I can read it. It is still BROKEN. I can after 20-30 seconds paste the key in, but the buttons do not work. I cannot register.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled avast. The older 5.x version told me there was a new version, but when I tried to let it update, it then told me I had the new version (version numbers did not match). So I uninstalled, got the new version, and installed it. Same issue, still cannot install the lic.
Control panel > Add/remove programs > click once on avast to select it > click on Change/Remove > scroll down the left pane and click on repair > click OK > follow directions
I went to http://www.eicar.org. Avast caught the virus but the pop up window telling me so is unreadable to.
So I am going else where for AV.
Avast does not work with vanilla win2k boxes (at least mine). I think it is a video card issue. I have old, but popular at the time, nvidia card. Its probably time to dump windoze to and use a more secure OS (http://distrowatch.com/). If it wasnt for half life, it would have been done long ago.
Something you could try is a full uninstall and re-install, using both the 4.8 and 5.0 uninstall utilities.
Make sure you have the full installation file required to re-install, however, as it is best to be offline while no AV is installed on the system.
I have no idea if this will solve the issue. It is something I have heard of working in some cases, and thus maybe worth a try.
I had asked a while back whether v5 would work properly on my wife’s antique W2K system, since the sys requirements for 2K are a little contradictory on the avast site.
One of the old-timers here replied that yes, it would run fine on 2K SP4 if you remember to pick up three DLLs that are required for installation and not included in the installer. That probably ties into the guess about video drivers already made.
The files are: MSVCR90.DLL, MSVCP90.DLL and MFC90U.DLL, and should go into the System32 folder before you start installing avast 5.
Sorry for the necro-bump, but this is info for other users still running W2K out there:
I’m still running W2K sp4 (on the pc I’m posting from actually) and Avast 5 runs quite happily on it. I recently (an hour ago) had a power outage that shut down all my PCs and resulted in a corrupted mfc90u.dll - reinstalling Avast fixed it as it automatically installs the MS C++ redistributable package also. I don’t know whether this is a new thing or not, but if you run W2K, you can breathe easy (for now at least!)
