which product do u use? avast internet security, antivirus or free?

R1ftgate have you tried a repair of the program? do this though add remove programs, click on avast then scroll down to repair and see if that will solve the problem for you before any further step’s are taken. It will also help us if you could supply some imformation about your system. Have you fully cleaned out all previous av products.

i tried to repair it did not work i am running windows xp sp3 if that helps

i am using avast! free antivirus

Was this an upgrade or a clean install?
Had you just received a virus definition prior to this happening? If not, what were you doing prior to the problem?

What antivirus were you using prior to Avast? This could be the problem, if for example, there is (or was) a trial pre-loaded AV already installed, or you had previously used another AV.

Any other security software installed?

Did you reboot after installing Avast?

Does the computer work ok, or are there other issues?

my computer has been ofline for about two months because of a loose componant it was working fine prior to this its only now that this has started

Let’s start from the beginning. Is your machine working fine now (we’re not talking Avast)…just the machine?

i was using symantec endpoint protection but got a big trojan and ended up with avast i also use spybot S&D but not to often

apart from avast yes

How did you remove Symantec?

Do you use Teatimer?

i dont know my it guy did it

To be sure Symantec is uninstalled properly, please do the following:

Download and run the Norton removal tool from here to clear them http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Reboot after you uninstall.

Do it again to make sure.

Also, people have had conflicts with Teatime in Spybot S&D. This software is outdated and is now replaced with MBAM (Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware) http://www.malwarebytes.org/. You may want to uninstall Spybot as well per the vendor’s instructions.

To follow on from Safesurfs advice, if you do uninstall Spybot, there is a procedure that is worth following.
Basically it involves turning off any resident protection set, and importantly undo-ing any immunization that may have been set. It isn’t complicated.
Let us know if you want the details.

i have done all that and still the same message

R1ftgate if all you have been advised is done:

Download Latest version of Avast! free antivirus

Uninstall Avast! with the Uninstall Utility

Sometimes it´s not possible to uninstall avast! the standard way - using the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in control panel. In this case, you can use our uninstallation utility aswClear. Uninstall Avast! with the Uninstall Utility How to uninstall our software using aswClear:
 1. Download aswClear5.exe on your desktop
 2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
 3. Open (execute) the uninstall utility
 4. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
 5. Click REMOVE
 6. Restart your computer

No problems with SpyBot Search & Destroy here, but I’m not using TeaTimer. If you choose to uninstall it, follow http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html. If you’ve used SpyBot S&D immunization, you would want to remove the immunizations using it’s program interface first, as others have stated.

R1ftgate,

Let’s pick up where things left off…

 1. Have removed Symantec from your machine again to make sure it is gone?
 2. Have uninstalled Spybot SD or not?
 3. Have you uninstalled and done a clean install of Avast Free?

If your issues are not cleared up after this, then I’d like to check for malware since this may cause AV’s from working properly.

Check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
· Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select “Perform FULL Scan”, then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to the answers to my 3 questions above and your MBAM log in your next post. Thank you.
