Avast cant access internet but other apps do

Hello
I’ve just upgraded to A8, and I have a weird issue - Internet access works perfectly on my computer, except for avast - cant register it, cant update the DB.
When I clock on the registration button, the “Market” tab gets selected, and I get a message (in french) saying: Avast! Market: an internet connection is required to view this content.

No proxy defined, IE works fine, same pbm whether I use no proxy at all or IE params.

Any ideas ?

Many thaks

J

It is certainly weird as the normal internet connection issue is a firewall blocking avastSvc.exe and that would result in no http connections being made, not only avast related.

What is your operating system and firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe, avastUI.exe and avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entries for them and try doing a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

I am on windows 7 and standard windows firewall. I had looked into and could see any rules referring to avast. I will look again.

Many thanks for the help

The standard win7 firewall doesn’t have outbound protection enabled by default, so that shouldn’t be the issue, unless you have enabled outbound protection ?

Were you updating to avast 8 from an earlier version of avast or another AV ?

Yes, I was upgrading from A7 (uninstall then install A8), which for some reason, could not update the wirus definition - however, I could access the url (http://download999.acast.com…/servers.defs or something similar, from a brower - while the update failed)

the machine is remote (helping out the family) and I should have access this afternoon - which makes my answer not so precise - sorry about this

It would probably be best to do a clean reinstall as it appears that you have some corruption after the update to avast 8:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 8.0.1489 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions).

    1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs, if you can’t do that (as appears to be the case) start from the next step, reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), first for 7.x if previously installed and then for 8.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
