Only other antivirus that has been on this was Avira, uninstalled with Appremover and followed by the Avira Registry Cleaner. Only other firewall that has been on this machine was PrivateFirewall, uninstalled with Revo.
You certainly can use a 3rd party application for this - do a before/after comparison on a VM, and manually check entries & files.
Appremover gets rid of Avira well, although not everyone has that experience. On physical machines I’ve personally seen Appremover twice clean up what the vendor specific tools for McAfee and Norton missed on respective installations, so I tend to use Appremover first for those and then the vendor specific tools after.
I’ve already said that originally I used the Avira utility, which predictably found no leftovers.
Appremover makes a complete mess of Avast though so I won’t be using it on this product (but I’m reminded that Avast doesn’t want any part of OPSWAT, and Appremover is related.)
In what way does a random thread that mentions Privatefirewall help?
I never had any trouble with Privatefirewall, I just didn’t like it and uninstalled it long ago using Revo Uninstaller. Revo Uninstaller activates the standard uninstaller first, then it does it’s own checks for registry entries and files that were missed. PrivateFirewall hasn’t needed a special removal tool in two years.
I’ve gone through all your advice, and can’t help but think it’s all a red herring as none of it is particularly relevant or actually involves doing anything.
RJK3, thanks for info - we know about this bug and we’d like to ask you if you can compress (rar/7z) \Windows\memory.dmp file and upload on our ftp. We have to look at this in more detail. Thanks.
Thanks for your reply Scott and pk. Unfortunately no minidump was generated. I checked before running system restore (was getting the “You must close dialog boxes before you can close event viewer” error), and to make sure I wasn’t crazy did a deep scan with Recuva afterwards.
I’ve had the same problem - Avast automatically performed an update (I assume, as my laptop asked me for confirmation earlier) and when I came back to my computer I had the same BSOD and now have the update error. Unfortunately I cleared the minidump folder before looking for solutions, is there anything else that may be of use?
The larger problem however, is I am unable to access the real-time shields interface. Windows Action Center is alerting to me that I don’t currently have AV protection.
I’m also getting a windows crash / blue screen in aswsp.sys. For me it only happens when debugging minidump files in Visual Studio 2010 and is 100% reproducible.
I uninstalled Avast and the crash went away.
I reinstalled Avast and upgraded to the newest version and got the crash again.
