Avast causing pinging -- driving me crazy!!!!

Have an XP laptop. I started noticing an intermittent pinging from the audio speaker even when on mute. It sounds identical to the noise that you hear when you raise or lower the volume. So I disabled Avast’s sounds but it still continued. Only when I completely disabled Avast does it go away. What is going on and how can I stop it – it’s driving me crazy!!! Thanks, Sue

Hello soozavast and Welcome: If you could please provide further information it will help us in resolving your issue/concerns.
You stated you are using XP. What version of Avast do you have installed. What other security software are you running…Firewall/ Anti-malware etc. Also when you say you completely disabled Avast…could you be more specific…how did you disable Avast.
Thanks

Is this where you disabled Avast sounds?(Attachment)

Why do you think it is avast who is doing that noise? It doesn’t.

Hi Schmidthouse–

I am using the free version of Avast. Am running Malwarebytes and Comodo firewall. Initially I disabled the sounds as in the image you provided but then when I got the pinging back I then right-clicked on the taskbar and disabled all virus protection for an hour. That silenced it. BUT this morning I completely disabled virus protection again after I got the pinging back and it pinged a couple times before it went silent (Avast protection was disabled). So it does seem to indicate that perhaps Avast is not the culprit. Did an internet search using “computer beep” instead of ping and it might be BIOS problems (but no pattern to the sound so doubtful there), a dirty or defective harddrive or an overwhelmed CPU (too many programs running). So will explore those more before I blame AVAST, especially since I did get those two little pings/beeps this morning after I disabled all protection the second time. Thanks, Sue

You are welcome. Please let us know what you find out, and I would tend to ask the same question ‘Tech’ asked…in his initial reply.
