Avast console won't display

For some reason when I try to start Avast to do a scan, after it completes the test of memory and startup it disappears. I have to hit the “Stop memory test” button to get the console to appear. Also, whatever I right click the Avast icon on the taskbar and I make a selection (right now I have “Start avast antivirus” frozen on my screen in a gray box) it freezes it to the screen. I will have to reboot to get it off.

Which is your operational system?
Any other resident installed (antivirus or antispyware)?
How mcuh RAM memory do you have?
If you run ashsimp2.exe from avast folder, will the skinless interface open?

I have WindowsXP home, 512 Mb ram
Have spysweeper 5.0, Winpatrol, spybot search & destroy Kerio firewall. I just tried going in my programs, & opened Avast & it starts scanning memory with just the plain Avast look & when it got done running the memory scan it saidit was going to continue then just doesn’t, Nevr had had a problem until just the last week with all the new updates & maybe spy sweeper 5 installation. Just not sure. I even took everything out of startup that I didn’t absolutely need.

It’s just an irritation, because I just hadn’t had any problems. I did go to the newest release of Avast here lately too.

You could have messed avast installation IF any necessary file was blocked on installation.
Please, close all your security programs (don’t need to close the firewall) and install avast again.

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot
  3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html)
  4. Boot
  5. Install again

Maybe you’ve removed something that you shouldn’t…

Gemini, same thing here. Started last week. I have been using Avast for about 1 1/2 years with no problem.

Windows XP Home SP 2
Pentium III processor
640 RAM

Tried the Ashsimp2.exe and got the same thing. First click, the hour glass appeared on cursor and then disappeared after about 7 seconds. Second click, the Simple interface opened.

I uninstalled Avast and am using AVG temporarily. The words freezing on my screen have stopped. I’ve been online now for about 1 1/2 hours and so far so good.
