I have been using Avast for quite some time. Normally, I havbe no problems. The other day, Avast did a program update. After the update, I was asked to re-boot. I did so. Now I get asked to re-boot several times a day. Very annoying. I have probably re-booted at least a dozen times since the program update. How do I kill the notice that keeps telling me to update?

if you had searched the term "reboot " you would have landed here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=17722.msg150994#msg150994
and not needed anyone to do it for you .
good luck ;D

Also check this.
The operating system restart needed by avast message could be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt

I looked at the message you pointed to. I fail to see how it applies.

I located the file. 0 bytes in size. I just zapped it. Will see if that works. Thanks.

I got a notice to re-boot shortly after I deleted the zero byte file “reboot.txt”. I again deleted the file, and rebooted. After the re-boot, the zero byte file has re-appeared.
This is frustrating!

If that didn’t resolve it check this:
You can also check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains “PendingFileRenameOpertaions”.
Check its contents and if there’s only “reboot.txt” from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don’t delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.

Just before I came looking at the is forum, Avast again asked me to re-boot. After seeing your suggestion, I went into regedit. I found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager. I saw nothing labeled “PendingFileRenameOpertaions” but I did find “FileRenameOperations”. It contains one entry called “(Default)” Type REG_SZ with value not set. Should I delete this? I was unsure since the name on my machine did not exactly match what you said to look for. I am using Windows-XP.
I get the window asking me to reboot every time avast looks for updates. I switched from automatic updates to having Avast ask me if it may update. That did not help. So now I have disabled all updating other than manual updates to see if that will help.
When I type, I need to look at the keyboard as I am not a touch typist. So when Avast puts its reboot request on the screen, if I am typing text and hit the carriage return, my system reboots. That is a real pain in the butt! Easy to lose my train of thought waiting for my machine to reboot. Luckily I save incremental backups when I write.
This problem did not used to exist with avast. The problem has been chronic ever since avast program update to Build Feb2006 (4.6.763).
Where do I report this program bug?

I wouldn’t delete it as it isn’t a match.
Doing a manual update should have no different effect it isn’t the initiation but the result of the update. So long as the reboot.txt is still there you are going to get that reboot request.
Try deleting the reboot.txt before doing a manual update and see if it asks for a reboot. If not, shut everything down and do your own restart and see if the reboot.txt comes back.

Got some more information just now. I now do manual updates and I have my firewall verify with me before I allow avast to call other programs, so I can see better what is going on. When I do an iAVS update, Avast D/Ls a huge file. Far bigger than virus defs. It looks to me like it is D/Ling a new copy of the software. Then I get a message saying my virus defs are up to date and my program is up to date. Shorty thereafter, bootlog.txt pops up in Avast4/Setup folder, along with new versions of setup.ini, summary.txt, and setup.log.
Looking thru setup.log it looks like the reboot was called for when it downloaded the program. How do I tell Avast to look for new virus definitions but NOT program updates?
I am putting today’s segment of setup.log below.

avast looks/updates for what you tell it to a manual iAVS Update should only check for VPS update, a manual Program Update with check for both Program and VPS updates.
The VPS updates and Program updates tend to incremental so usually they are small. So if there is something else going on it may be that there is a problem that avast is trying to resolve.
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

I am sure I told Avast to just check for aAVS updates. That is why I found the huge D/L so odd. Odd behavior was consistant.
I tried repair. That did not work. So I un-installed avast, re-booted, then installed a fresh copy. Everything seems to be working OK now. I have re-enabled automatic updates. So far, updates appear to have worked, and I have not yet been told to re-boot.
You’ve find the solution just before I’ll suggest it to you. Glad it worked.
