avast! Context Menu scan

Hello everyone!

I recently downloaded and installed avast! and so far I like it. I do have a question about the context scan (right click a file/folder and click “Scan with avast!”), and I was wondering if there was a GUI. When I initiate the scan, nothing appears. I don’t know if it’s clear or not. Can you explain this?

Thanks, Brad

EDIT: I have avast! Free Antivirus 7.0.1426

I enabled that and then restarted my computer. It still doesn’t work.

If required, I can make a video of the issue. It’s a dead link in the context menu. I’ve tried it on several .exe files and a folder.

Video explaining the problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8cFzdp7nkU

You see, I right-click and scan the item, but it doesn’t do anything. The File-System Shield doesn’t even notice it. So, if it is scanning, I don’t know if it is or not.

I have watched your video and it isn’t very clear.

But, you are essentially doing an on-demand scan when you use the right click context menu scan. So it won’t show any activity in the File System Shield (FSS) as that is an on-access shield.

If you tried to execute a program, the FSS would scan that before it is allowed to run. When you right click on a file/folder and select Scan it isn’t being run you are just doing an on-demand scan.

Sorry about the video. I wanted to do it in full resolution (1600x900), so it was a little blocky. I explained the video in post that contained it. The video was meant to be a visual aid.

How do I get the on-demand/context scans to work?

Whilst it wasn’t very clear, it was just about workable to see what you were attempting.

But I believe that the context scan is still working as it should, it uses ashQuick.exe to perform the scan; quick by name quick by nature, if anything is found it alerts, otherwise it ends.

I believe that you may need to change some settings for it to change that:
From the avastUI, Settings, Basic section, Special Scans, check the box; now that will create a new entry in the Scan Computer section for Explorer scans. Now I believe the result should be displayed it does for me, see images.

That is EXACTLY what I want DavidR.

However, Pondus had already shown me that. I enabled the box, and it still didn’t show that.

Should I try a reinstall of avast!?

EDIT: I’ve tried the context menu scan with the EICAR test virus and it finds it. Still no GUI, though.

Weird, I don’t know why it isn’t working for you ?

I would try a repair of avast first:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

Unfortunately, no.

I’m going to reinstall completely. Hopefully it will work :stuck_out_tongue:

Hooray! It works! All it took was a clean install.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

You’re welcome.
