AVAST could not connect to server :(

 Hi to all,and sorry for my bad english…
From about a month,Avast 4.7 h.e. say to me that can’t connect to server, with a red box…no virus definition updates and no prgram updates…i’ve not a firewall, win firewall is disabled…and to open iexplore internet pages i’ve to close avast, because if it’s turn on,i can’t access to internet…what should i’ve to do to fix it? i try much times to uninstall, download again and reinstall, and i’ve a recet registration key (about some days ago)…

pleas help me

Don’t worry, we can understand you

Why do you do that? :o :o

Ozzy, are you sure you’re not infected?
Some virus avoid antivirus updates…

I suggest to you download, install, update and run other trojan remover tools:
a-squared
Free AVG Antispyware
SUPERantispyware
and run a full avast scanning…

Maybe on avast logs you can see any error related to update problems… Basically, check:

  1. If the servers.def file is corrupt or 0KB (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def).
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

  2. Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn’t help, try switching from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
You can run proxycfg -d in a DOS window to make your computer connect direct, without proxy. You can run proxycfg -h for help.

:frowning: Nothing at all…i’d try to do what you tell me,but no solution…i’ve no adware, trojan, virus ecc… always red box with “cannot connect to server”…

i’ve no firewall cause ehmm…ehm… there’s no cause O_O

Vlk wrote this today:
On a side note, whenever you see symptoms like “I try Add/Remove Programs → avast and nothing happens” or “I try to invoke avast update and nothing happens”, the cure that almost always works is to kill any running instances of the process “avast.setup” (or avast01.setup, avast02.setup etc. - if these are running as well). This can be done from the Processes tab in the Task Manager.

Can you be more detailed, what did you do and what happened, any errors, etc.

I certainly think there is a cause/need.
Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.

Now I don’t know your experience or what security based software or what your backup/recovery strategy is, but without excellent protection a good recovery strategy and a good level of experience I feel you need a firewall and preferably one that provides outbound protection.

I have a wide range of protection, do daily back-ups and weekly images of my HDD, yet I wouldn’t go naked onto the internet without a firewall.
