Avast crashed computer

I’m using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I recently installed Avast! 6. The installation completed with no errors, I did a quick scan and rebooted my computer. About a minute after I logged in, something strange happened; moving my mouse cursor over my taskbar would cause my cursor to change into the resizing cursor (vertical line with arrows on both sides) and I couldn’t interact with it at all. I then realized that I couldn’t interact with anything else either; I couldn’t create selection boxes on my desktop, use any of the programs I had running, use Icons, or even open the start menu (not even using the super key), but I could still move my cursor around the screen.

I rebooted in safe mode and uninstalled avast, but when I rebooted again, blue screen of death  . I restored my system to an earlier date, and didn’t bother to try installing Avast! again. Is this a known issue? What can I do to prevent it from happening again so I can use Avast!?

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Yes, I had AVG free before, I uninstalled it via the “Programs and Features” option in the control panel.

  • Ensure that all remnants of AVG are gone - AVG8.x (or higher) Remover, download tool from here, http://www.avg.com/download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

Alright, I ran the remover (didn’t take any more than 20 seconds)

Make sure to reboot.

Had similar problems there. I also can’t run any programs I saw only black screen. On-boot got BSOD.
Uninstalling avast! saved my computer.

danny96, did you remove any previous anti-virus software via the proper removal tool per DavidR’s suggestion?
Each av has their own removal tool. Be sure to use any and all removal tools in “safe” mode. Then run a cleaner. I recommend CCleaner.

If you can’t run “any” programs and get the BSOD, how could you uninstall avast?
