avast crashes in startup?

i have send mail to avast about this but in the mean while i thougt i could ask if someone have had same problem and been able to fix it (or just have good ideas to fix it).

so the problem is this: my avast was working fine until i took out my ide driver added adaptecs sata controller and put 2 sata drivers and added them to raid. Then i installed windows again (totaly, only took some documents from the old installation) and now i cant get avast working. I get the a logo in the right corner but not i-logo. There is emptyspace in rightcorner maybe the i icon but avast has crashed somehow and didnt/cant load the i logo. Even there is a-logo it doesnt respond to any actions same thing if i go trough start->programs->avast.

i have windows 2000. celeron 2000mhz with some biostar motherboard (or something like that) and 512 memmory, 2x80gb sata drives.
and btw i tried start delayer. It worked in one boot and next boots had the same thing again.
Avast is truly one of the gratest if you get it up and running.

Aren’t they merged? It’s difficult to say if you’re not able to right click the ‘a’ blue icon.

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

nope i tried to repair but nothing really changed… it is odd because it works in first boot but after second boot it doesnt respond at all. and i have installed it like 8 times now but nothing seems to work… i have´t tried to install older avast so i might try that if they dont figure out anything. It is a shame because i really liked this antivirus. Maybe avast doenst like sata or raid (or the sata adapter) since it worked perfectly from ide (non raid) on same computer.

The problem is certainly not related to the hardware (SATA vs IDE).

Which version of avast did you install, exactly? The way you’re describing it almost sounds like you actually installed the “network” version of avast (a.k.a. the “managed client”) - by default, it does not have the (i) ball shown, and the (a) ball is dummy (does not support any command - to prevent normal users from changing the configuration…).

Thanks
Vlk

thx for the replies.

No it is the home versio i got from your web page (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html). It is kinda weird because it works rearly normaly ((mostly when i have had it removed on startup and run it after startup)) and you can click the a logo and there is that i logo, but this is very rare. Is there a way to read the log or something to get bottom of this? I just installed windows with all the updates and software so i wouldnt like to to that again if that doesnt help anything.

Once finished, VRDB (the ‘i’ icon) will run each 21 days (by default). So it’s not rare, it’s designed for that

Yes, right click the ‘a’ blue icon and choose the Log Viewer.
If you can’t, just run C:.…\Avast4\ashLogV.exe

"There is that i logo, but this is very rare.

Yeah but should the i-logo be in the right corner ? i have only empty space between to avast a-logo and openoffice.

i couldn’t open the log for somereason… Only thing that seems to be working is the scan you get when you press folder or file with right mouse and scan…

and BTW i got the version number from add/remove
Current version:

  • program: 4.6.744
  • vps: 0602-1
  • news: 4.6.72
  • setup: 4.6.744

i wonder how it is possible that in somestartups it seems to crash but in some rear cases it works fine ???

2 weeks ago I installed OpenOffcie. I wanted to get familiar with it and find out about using it with 98SE. I have MS Office 2000 installed on same system. All newly installed.
After some initial “flakiness” [hard to be specific… 2 weeks ago]. I disabled OpenOffice’s icon by the clock via an OpenOffice option about loading on startup.
EVERYTHING smoothed out. Avast4 was fine. OpenOffice, by the way, was not too bad. Starting OpenOffice from the program group seemed just as effective as having their quickstart icon down by the clock.
I wonder if you have tried disabling OpenOffice at startup.
Perhaps things will straighten up as they did for me.
