The previous version of Avast! was 38 megabytes.The new version is 159 megabytes! Why such a huge increase in the size of the new version?

What do you mean the file size or are you comparing the avast5 folder size, which bears no relation to the installation file size ?
If anything the 5.0 installation file size is smaller than 4.8, as the virus database is smaller.
i think the file size is right.
I checked mine in program files and its 191mb.
the “setup” file and “defs” were the largest in 77.4 and 94.6 mb each.
I guess its the price you pay for increased functionality.

The problem is as I asked as comparing apples with oranges (the installation file with the size of the installation is pointless. You would have to compare the installed size of 4.8 against the installed size of 5.0.
Even then it is a bit pointless as the virus definitions are much different in that they aren’t compressed after installation (and for a time there is an apparent duplication after an update), which increases scanning speed. These and other improvements make comparisons pretty pointless.
My folder in program files is 118 mb. And ProgramData its 7,98 mb i think.
So nothing wrong here.
