Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I did a search and didnt find anything. For some reason if I have Avast enabled when I’m install or updating a Steam game, it get multiple files corrupt. I have to then disable Avast, do an game integrity check and have it replace the files that got corrupted. After the that the games run fine until Avast either does a scan or something. This has happenend with Call of Duty 4, Left for Dead 2, and Borderlands.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Can Avast support look into this and resolve why the AV is generating false positives or corrupting game files?
Some information might help:
What is the infected file name/s, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Files shouldn’t become corrupted just from scanning alone or sending the the chest for that matter, so it would help if you give more details on exactly what happened.
If there has been a detection on a game file that you consider an FP, you should confirm that and if so send the sample to avast for analysis:
Check the offending/suspect file at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here the URL in the Address bar of the VT results page. You can’t do this with the file securely in the chest, you need to extract it to a temporary (not original) location first, see below.
Create a folder called Suspect in the C: drive. Now exclude that folder in the File System Shield, Expert Settings, Exclusions, Add, type (or copy and paste) C:\Suspect*
That will stop the File System Shield scanning any file you put in that folder.
If only GData and avast detect it - GData uses avast as one of its two scanners so counts as 1 detection and almost certainly an FP.
Send the sample to avast as a False Positive:
Open the chest and right click on the file and select ‘Submit to virus lab…’ complete the form and submit, the file will be uploaded during the next update.
In the meantime (if you accept the risk), add the full path to the file to the exclusions lists: File System Shield, Expert Settings, Exclusions, Add and avast Settings, Exclusions
Restore it to its original location, periodically check it (scan it in the chest), there should still be a copy in the chest even though you restored it to the original location. When it is no longer detected then you can also remove it from the File System Shield and avast Settings, exclusions lists.
Well, that is the problem that nothing is put in the chest. It just plain an simple corrupts the files. I have to check the file consistency and download them again everytime I want to play. I have to do this while avast is disabled and play with it disabled too. I even removed avast and the problem went away, then a couple of days later I re-installed Avast, and the problem returned.
