Hi,
I installed Avast the other day to help remove a virus, and after scanning and cleaning all the infected files, I restarted my PC. When it started, I got a messege saying something about how the Avast executiable file was modifiyed, and if I wanted to stop it from running. I clicked Yes (to stop it from running), and then restarted my PC. When I started it again, all the exe file icons changed to this - http://img281.imageshack.us/img281/1925/untitled4qu.jpg
and this error comes up when I open any exe file that didnt come with Windows - http://img281.imageshack.us/img281/4410/untitled4pi.jpg
.
Can anyone help me fix this because I dont want to have to reinstall everything?
Im using the newest version of Avast 4 Home and I have Windows XP, but no service pack installed.
Avast will not alter any of your exe files, but if they are infected they will be moved to the chest but you must tell the programme to do it. I don’t understand the item about avast file being modified, it should not do that. The initial thought is that you are somehow running as a restricted user. I would advise you most strongly to update xp to sp2 as soon as possible. If you could give more information about your system that would be helpfull. Welcome to the forum
Maybe the problem was associated with the VRDB (“Virus Recovery Database”)
Help File quote:
avast! creates an integrity database, i.e. it stores information about the actual state of the files, doing it three versions back for each file. The database creation/maintenance is performed either when the computer is idle, or when the screen-saver is running
If you do a Google newsgroup search on Avast and Battlefield 2, you’ll find that that several people have confilcts with the two programs, and it may be due to possibility of acrovision encoded in the Battlefield 2 program. Acanz, are you also running anti-spyware programs?
Remember that every computer has dll’s that have been created by hundreds of different manufacturers (if not more) running and interacting with each other, and software conflicts often result. I’m amazed that the OS boots at all considering how many items never get cleaned out of the registry (even after uninstalling).
Sorry Zagor, as far I know, VRDB will NEVER change any file association or mess your executables. It only stores the information needed to restore infected executables. It’s called by Avast Cleaner as acanz did, but, unfortunatelly, not post the name of the infected file or the virus that were cleaned by avast Cleaner…
