Hi,
I have recently bought a new computer with Windows 7. I am using Avast Internet Security 7.0.1466. Apparently Windows Defender is operating as it requests updates all the time.
I know nothing about Windows Defender, whether it is an AV or a malware program.
Should I disable it, or is there any harm in letting it run. I don’t want any conflict with Avast.

Welcome to the forum. 
Defender is a Malware program and actually not needed since avast! Malware detection is at least as good as defender’s.
Most of us use and recommend Malwarebytes Free as the perfect companion for avast!
