Avast delays startup

I’ve been using avast! personal edition for the past six months and i think it’s a great antivirus but there’s one thing i cannot completely understand.
At windows startup avast starts in inactive mode (the “a” with the forbidden sign) and it takes almost a minute to start spinning. Also, for that whole minute avast “locks” other programs from starting, i mean, startup continues when avast icon starts spinning.

I have installed avast! in 5 or 6 computers (some with win xp sp1 and others with win xp sp2) and all of them have the same delay.

The weirdest thing is that sometimes avast doesn’t load in inactive mode, (the icon starts spinning as soon as it’s shown in the task bar).

Is there a way to stop this delay from happening?.

Oh!. my OS is win xp sp2, startup programs are avast!, zonealarm free edition and ad-aware.

same problem here…

Avast starts up (with red symbol), then everything is blocked and after some time the red symbol disapears and the other apps start…

This problem suddenly appeared, becaus I’m using Avast since months now and I didn’t have any problems untill now :frowning:

Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
Are you by any chance using spysweeper?
If so, use the restore/recover or whatever it may be called to restore the deleted registry entry and update your definitions file for spysweeper. It reports incorrectly (false positive) the avast ashDisp.exe which is the icon you see on your system tray.
Other programs that can block are the startup monitors: PrevX, ProcessGuard, WinPatrol, TeaTimer, Ad-watch, etc.

strange thing is: today I booted up and the problem didn’t appear anymore… strange

well… thanks for your replay, but perhaps the problem was that my router was broke, today I installed the new one and now it works…

Set the LAN IP addresses and it should work properly after that. WinXP has weird long startup if you leave IP detection of LAN card to Automatic.

I had the problem recently, the icon doesn’t start to spin for about 10 seconds or so than begins…I should mention that this is on laptop & a wireless connection I tried to uninstall & reinstall but it still holds off running for a few seconds…should I be concerned…?
