I booted up my WinXP laptop this morning and up popped this warning message:
avast!: Incompatible software detected
"We have found out that the avast! WebShield module has compatibility problems with ZoneAlarm’s privacy blocking features.
This may result in some web pages not loading properly or an inability to log on to certain sites (such as Yahoo mail etc.) We are working together with the ZoneLabs team to find a viable solution.
Meanwhile, we recommend turning off the transparent proxy mode of the WebShield module which is known to be the cause of the conflict. You will still be able to use WebShield with ZoneAlarm by manually configuring your browser (described below)
Do you want to disable WebShield transparent proxy mode? (Select “No” only if you aren’t using ZA’s privacy blocking features or have been using avast! 4.6 with ZA w/o any problems)."
The only problem with this is that I don’t have Zone Alarm installed. I did have it, some time ago, but found it termendously annoying and have been comfortable ever since with just Avast Home (regularly updated) and WinXP firewall. So, my questions are: would there be some remaining traces of Zone Alarm that have caused this warning?; why has it kicked off today, when I’ve not changed anything?; is there a more sinister cause? I answered no to the request to disable WebShield’s tranparent proxy mode by the way.
