Avast didn't stop the old hijack "Microsoft has found a bug and frozen your PC"

On 1/15 I was looking for smothered pork chop recipes, when I got the old ‘Mocrosoft has found a virus on your computer and has frozen your computer to protect it. Call xxxxxxxxx for support’ or something like that. Surprisingly the URLs are still in my history:

https://8servicedirectory-587error.azurewebsites.net/firiedgex/
https://8servicedirectory-587error.azurewebsites.net/

I am very disappointed that Avast didn’t stop this script that has to be at least 7 years old. Shutting down my laptop & starting in Safe Mode (not easy on Win10) seems to have solved the problem. I ran a Full Virus Scan & a Boot-time scan with clean results. I still wonder if there is anything lingering on my system. For what it’s worth, I was using Firefox 64.0.2.

And you think it is the same ::)

First car with petrol engine was made in 1885, i see many parked outside here here but i doubt they have much in common except 4 wheels and a combustion engine

It is usually just a URL with short life and nothing dangerous unless you call that number and they manage to trick you in to pay for something

Understood.

You could try running Avast Secure Browser or if you have a paid version of Avast, Avast Sandbox.

Or: Sandboxie: https://www.sandboxie.com/
