Avast difficulties on other user's desktop

Thanks Vlk, it is (fat32), great to learn something new every day.

Whew! I wish I could say I’m getting somewhere … anywhere with this. I’m not. I am unable to find the word “security” anywhere … and I “think” I’ve followed all the instructions I’ve been given. I’ve never found that .mdb file!

Now, take a look at this. This is as close as I can get to anything that looks like it might be involved in “security”:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Nana2/runningAVASTunderdiffuser.jpg

This is what I get. So, I switched over to the other user, right clicked on the AVAST icon and changed the user to OWNER … (me), put in my password … and lo and behold, I was able to start AVAST running on his side.

However, those settings only lasted until I turned off the scan. To start it working again … I had to go through all that rigamarole.

I switched back to my side, tried to run AVAST and the form came up again, telling me it was OWNER using the thing, but asking for my password again.

Hey, are you guys getting as bored reading this as I am typing it?

Do they have “special class for dummies” in this?

I’m just waiting for one of you to tell me to get on the bus that goin’ to the zoo!

Nan

 You’re opening properties of the shortcut, not avast itself.

Please do the following. Open My Computer, go to (C:), Program Files, ALWIL Software, avast4, data, and right-click the file avast4.mdb. Open the file’s properties and you should see the Security tab.

gor gave Nana2 the path to it in but Nana2 has continually failed to find it.

I've never found that .mdb file!

Could the .mdb be a hidden extension, so all Nana2 can see is ‘avast4’ from 'Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab.

David,

I made those changes to my folder options.

I have followed all instructions.

I am getting NOWHERE.

The closest I got in properties was a page that suggested I drag the file into a “sharing” position … which has done nothing more that give me a headache!

I have yet to find the word “security.”

I’m out of my depth here.

I’m at the point where I’m wondering what the heck I originally posted for!!! AVAST works fine from my side … I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed that my d.h. doesn’t do anything silly. :-\

Now I have to find that folder I’ve “dragged” into Sharing … and put it back.

Nan

Have you found the avast4.mdb file yet?

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to this folder C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA from the list of files can you see avast4.mdb (See Image)? If so move the mouse pointer to it and right click it and select properties.

Security is the Title of one of the Tabs in the properties window that pops-up.

Yes. That’s the file I found. I moved it to MY SHARED FILES like it said to do. Now it is sitting in SHARED files. I tried to open it … of course it wont open.

Should I put it back?

Yes put it back.

I tried to open it ... of course it wont open.

No, don’t try to open it. Using the Right mouse button, click on the file, you will see a small menu at the bottom of that you will see Properties, Left click on that.

Now you should see the Properties window, there should be a Tab titled Security at the top of the window.

:PI’m starting to slip into “silly mode” here.

I have followed your instructions. Here’s a shot of what I’m seeing.

This is the ONLY time the word “security” appears.

Obviously, when this saga of mine is over, I am going to have to create a new identity if I ever want anyone to look at my posts again!

Nan

Are you people sure that there is a security tab?
She is using XP Home wich only has Simple Filesharing

Nana, is your drive formatted as FAT32 or as NTFS?

There is no security tab in mine and I’m using XP Home with SP2.

Hi Eddy!

If memory serves me right … the NTFS rings a bell. Where do I look to make sure?

Nan

My computer > right click the drive > properties

But, did you upgrade to XP Home and if so did you retain the fat32 format? If you did (like I did), you will not see the security tab (only on NTFS format), as Vlk explained when I raised the same question.

David it’s an upgarade to XP and the file format is NFTS.

That’s weird, unless it has something to do with doing an upgrade rather than a clean install, because that is the only thing we have in common, (I’m on XP Pro, your on XP Home, I’m on fat32, your on ntfs and neither of us have the security tab).

Perhaps there is something else in the mix as to why the security tab is visible?

Nothing weird about it at all. FAT32 doesn’t have the security tab because it lacks the specific options that are available on a NTFS system. XP Home doesn’t have it while it only has Simple File Sharing. You only have the security tab on XP Pro, NT and the W2x systems, since those are the only onces who allow you to set file specific security options.

Thanks Eddy. Mystery solved.

Thanks Eddy, looks like we and Nana2 (who has XP Home) have been chasing our tails trying to find something that isn’t there by design.

Many people knows this. I guess the people at Alwil also knows this. But people tend to try to solve problems with their own OS in mind. Normally this isn’t much of a problem, but in cases like this (XP home vs XP Pro) there are some (small) differences which one easy forgets.

I remember a call from someone who is in the same business like me. He said he had a system with a MS sticker on the site (XP key) and it corresponded with the key entered in the installation, but still some things where lacking and he couldn’t get them enabled. At first he thought he had found some rare illegal version of Windows Pro. So he asked me to have a look. He forgot that Windows was installed on FAT32. ‘Problem’ solved by me within 5 minutes ;D
