Avast disconnecting Internet connection

When I have avast 1125 build on my windows 7 sp1 64 bit operating system with cable Internet and wireless my connection disconnects once and awhile. When I go to remove avast the problem disappears. Help!

  1. What version of avast are you using? free, pro, AIS? Would be more helpful in the future to have your system specs in your signature.
  2. What do you mean by “disconnects once in a while”? Every few minutes? Every hour? etc.
  3. Do you have any other security software currently installed? Any other security software installed in the past?
  4. What is your firewall?
  5. When did you start having this problem?
  6. If you had problems with a previous version, have you tried a clean install of avast?
  7. Have you tried hard-wiring your computer to your router to see if the problem persists? I assume you have a laptop?
  8. You could try turning power to your router off for a few minutes then turning it back on.
  9. Is your router password protected? Are there any other computer that connect to the router?
  10. Have you noticed anything peculiar when the connection is dropping? Is your wifi signal ok? Is your wifi radio turning off intermittantly?
  11. Is the connection dropping out on certain websites?
  12. If it is, then I would run command prompt as administrator and type ipconfig /flushdns then press enter.
  13. Do you have anything near or in between the computer and router that could cause interference?
  14. Is your network adapter driver the most recent? Go to device manager in control panel to check this.
  15. Is your power management set to have the computer turn off the adapter to save power? Go to advanced power options to see what the setting is. Go to device manager to see if the option is checked. Is the connection dropping while on battery power, plugged in, or both? Again, I’m assuming this is a laptop.
  16. Under Manage Wireless Networks, do you have multiple networks set up? Is your primary network at the top of the list?

Sorry about the long list. These are some of the things that I would check. It may be one or none of them though. If you were having problems with earlier versions and have updated using the GUI then I would perform a clean install of avast and make sure that you have thoroughly removed any other security software that may conflict with avast.

well i did a clean install of the 1125 build and the problem seems to have disappeared.

im 100% sure that there is something in your os which conflicts with avast web shield…
try to narrow the list to find which software cause this, do you have any other security softwares installed atm?

avast free is the only anti-virus i have been using… never used anything else

I suggest an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade your key from old versions.
  7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

i did a clean install and my internet connection is running better but still not perfect. there is some slow downs from time to time. the disconnecting problem however appears to be gone from doing a clean install  what is weird about it though… all 3 computers in my household have this problem and doing a clean install solved it on all of them. some mysterious bug in the previous version? build 1000?

Avast improves with each new version, so the current version works out bugs/issues from older versions. You stated that you did a clean install. Was this on all 3 machines? Are you on a home network?

If you are still having a problem after doing a clean install on all 3 machines, and during your uninstall (using the Avast Uninstaller Tool, you also removed ALL versions and products of Avast at that time), then I would also check the following:

  1. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
  • Other security software
  • If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor’s uninstaller’s tool or another way)?
  1. Check your machines for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
    · Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (the blue button) for an on-demand scanner.
    · Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    · After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
    · Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
    · Once the program has loaded, select “Perform FULL Scan”, then click Scan.
    · The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
    · When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
    · Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
    · The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    · Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply if anything is found. Label your machines #1 - 3 so we can keep track of them.

  2. Update the Avast definitions and perform a Quick Scan. Report if any infection is found with the exact file name and location.
